When I got the call, how would you like to go to Bimini? I’ll admit the only references I had for Bimini were Ernest Hemingway, Gary Hart and some nefariousness in the 80’s. Good thing I am adventurous because the beauty of Bimini is so breathtaking I am completely smitten with the little island just two hours, but a world away from Miami and once you visit, you will be too. Bimini is the westernmost district of the Bahamas which is a chain of over 100 islands located less than 60 miles east of Miami. It is the closest point in the Bahamas to the mainland United States and about 130 miles west of Nassau Bahamas.
Ok, it’s not actually on the Resort World Bimini property but there are few places in the world you can get up close and personal with an authentic shipwreck. The SS Sapona ran aground in 1926 during a hurricane and its remains are still visible and an amazing attraction at the tip of North Bimini. Legend has it that some of the wood was used in the construction of the Compleat Angler hotel and bar which we couldn’t find…but maybe you will!
9. THE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH
Also not officially on the resort but if you are on an island with a fountain of youth, wouldn’t you want to check it out? The story goes that Juan Ponce de Leon, in search of everlasting youth, wrote there was a land called Beimini where it could be found. (I agree!) History has recorded that de Leon’s travels led him to Florida so it’s totally plausible that he had to pass through South Bimini to get there! Today, the fountain is found in the salt water mangroves that cover four miles of North Bimini- at The Healing Hole, a pool at the end of several underground tunnels. When the tide goes out, cool mineral waters rich with lithium and sulfur are pumped into the pool. And we know what lithium does for the Energizer bunny! I’m just saying…
8. RESORT WORLD BIMINI SUPERFAST
The first thought would be to compare the Superfast to other ships carrying day passengers to Freeport and Bimini. That would be a huge mistake. Bimini Superfast is a real cruise ship. 1500 passengers, 10 stories high, this 32,000 ton ship with speeds up to 30 knots is the fastest cruise in America. And with over 180 fully remodeled cabins you can make the trip in comfort and style. Sailing from Miami and/or Ft. Lauderdale is just over two hours; Superfast boasts five restaurants, lounges and a casino with blackjack tables, slots, roulette and a sports book which kicks into action once the ship is three miles off the coast of Miami/Ft. Lauderdale. The ship sails from Port Everglades Tuesday through Thursday and from Port of Miami Friday through Sunday.
7. WATER COLORS
I never knew the Atlantic Ocean had this many shades of blue, and when I saw promo pictures of this idyllic island I just knew Photoshop and filters were involved. I was wrong. For a native of Detroit, Michigan like me, the view when you step off the Superfast is breathtaking. It’s almost hard to take it all in but as you travel by tram to the resort the colors from azure to midnight hues of blue sweep you up in there luxury and then you reach the resort and the infinity pool which seems to bleed into the sea and you know it’s going to be a magnificent daycation.
6. WATER SPORTS
Resort World Bimini provides many ways to engage with the big blue from The Bimini Undersea adventures, Kayaking, Paddle Boarding or snorkeling to Water bikes, and skis, Parasailing and glass bottom boat rides. There’s also shipwreck snorkeling and the Mangrove (think fountain of youth) Kayak tour.
5. BEACHFRONT VILLAS
While the 325 luxury room hotel opens in spring 2015, the exceptional 1, 2, 3 and four bedroom oceanfront villas open as are the 1 bedroom studio villas and all are perfectly designed to enjoy the island lifestyle inside and out. Modern, beach chic and awash in white and neutral tones the villas are great for couples, families or that always welcome girlfriend getaway! All villas include gourmet kitchens, spacious living and dining rooms and open doors to the ocean…
Once you decompress with a cocktail and a little sand between your toes, it’s time to rent a golf cart and head into the city. There are several little ones on the seven mile stretch that is north Bimini, but Alice Town is the heart of the city where you’ll find the Bimini Museum, Straw Market with local vendors, the Bimini Bread company and Stuart’s. Family owned forever, Stuart’s is legendary for their conch salad, conch hill, a Kalik and the perfect island vibe and view.
Resort World Bimini like most resorts has several restaurants with a variety of specialties. I will admit I was disappointed in the lack of great seafood dishes available at all the restaurants on an island know to have the best fishing in the Caribbean. The notable spots are Sabor, the Healing Hole Rum Bar (see #9) and Amicci’s if you just must have pizza and sandwiches on a Caribbean island.
2. THE CASINO
I’m not a gambler when it comes to my wallet so I had to rely on the pro’s for the 411 on what makes the casino at Resort World Bimini a standout and all mentioned their reward program being worth it, the sports book being the only one of its kind and hot casino promotions like the Sign up and Spin where new members get $50 instantly. One of the best things about the Resort World Bimini casino is that everything is pretty, shiny and brand new!
1. TIME TO RELAX, RELATE, RELEASE!!! When was the last time you spent five uninterrupted hours luxuriating on the beach? On my first trip, on the way to port everglades I was on the phone screaming at my cable company, sending texts while sitting at the light and sending emails while I waited in line for my boarding documents. Two hours later I was floating in the crystal clear blue waters of Bimini smiling at the clouds above… For hours…without a care in the world. And that alone is priceless.
