Former “X Factor” stars Sharon Osbourne and Mario Lopez grabbed some attention (not all of it positive) at the much-maligned 41st Annual Daytime Emmy Awards, which took place at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, Calif., on June 22, 2014. The awards show is presented by and voted on by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) and Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS). Osbourne was a judge on “The X Factor” U.K. from 2004 to 2007 and in 2013. Lopez hosted “The X Factor” U.S. in 2012 and 2013.
For the first time in Daytime Emmy history, the ceremony was not televised. Instead, it was Webcast via Livestream on the official Daytime Emmys website. The ceremony (hosted by Kathy Griffin) was universally slammed by critics and viewers, with many people commenting that the show was “tacky,” “hard to watch,” “unprofessional” and a “train wreck.”
Lopez was among the winners and presenters at the show. As a host of “Extra,” he won the prize for Outstanding Entertainment News Program. He shares the award with various other employees of “Extra,” including departing host Maria Menounos, who is leaving to take a hosting job at E! News on E! Entertainment Television. It was the first time that “Extra” was nominated for this Daytime Emmy award, and it resulted in a tie this year with “Entertainment Tonight.”
“Entertainment Tonight” executive producer Linda Bell Blue gave a long-winded acceptance speech that apparently had Osbourne fuming while Osbourne was waiting to present the next two awards. After Bell Blue’s speech, Lopez gave his speech on behalf of the “Extra” team, and said: “I’ll keep this brief. Thank you. This is coming at a really special time. We are entering our 20th year. I don’t just stand out here by myself. It’s a real solid team effort. I just want to thank our EPs [executive producers] real quick: Theresa Coffino, Jeremy Speigel, the Bill Belichick of the team and I feel like our Tom Brady. Thank you so much.” Lopez was also joined on stage by “Extra” senior executive producer Lisa Gregorisch-Dempsey.
After Lopez left the stage, “The Talk” co-hosts Osbourne and Sheryl Underwood came out on stage to present the awards for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. Osbourne, who was slurring her words and appeared to be intoxicated, let out a rant about Bell Blue’s long acceptance speech: “Finally, my lord! I feel like I’ve been here for five f*cking hours and I’ve only just got here. Really, so rude! It’s not being televised, so really, just get pissed [British slang for drunk] and have a good old time. Everyone can throw up in the toilet, go home, and f*ck everyone they work with!”
“The Talk” was nominated at the ceremony for Outstanding Talk Show/Entertainment, but lost once again to “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” which has dominated the wins in this category since 2005. Osbourne then let more vulgarities fly out of her mouth when she joked with Underwood on stage, “You’ve given four bl*wjobs today.” Underwood replied, “I tried really, really hard.” Osbourne said, “Well try harder next time, darling!”
Anyone who watched the reality show “The Osbournes” or is familiar with Osbourne already knows that Osbourne and her family like to curse a lot, but “The Osbournes” bleeped out obscenities. (As one of the executive producers of “The Osbournes,” Osbourne won an Emmy Award for its first season.) But apparently, a lot of people think Osbourne went too far at the Daytime Emmys show, and they think her behavior was inappropriate because she was at a formal awards show, not in a casual setting such as her home. Some people on the Internet thought Osbourne was hilarious at the Daytime Emmys, but most people commenting were not amused. However, she did get a standing ovation from many people who were at the awards show, including “The Talk” co-host Aisha Tyler.
Osbourne wasn’t the only star being crude on stage. Controversial comedienne Griffin also cursed and told insulting jokes about several celebrities, including Lopez, Kris Jenner and Bethenny Frankel. At one point in the show, Griffin made fun of Lopez’s playboy reputation by saying about him to the audience: “Based on our one-nighter together, I’m still itching.” Later, former “Let’s Make a Deal” director Lenn Goodside tweeted to Griffin: “@kathygriffin You killed it last night at the #Daytime Emmys! I hope your rash from @MarioLopezExtra heals soon.”
Earlier in the evening, Lopez presented the award for Outstanding Talk Show Host, which was resulted in a voting tie: The winners were Katie Couric and Dr. Mehmet Oz, who were both no-shows at the event. (Couric had a good excuse for not being there: She got married the day before to her second husband, John Molner, in East Hampton, N.Y.) Given how much people all over the Internet have been blasting the 2014 Daytime Emmy Awards, the no-show winners might have been better off not being there. The Washington Post described the 2014 Daytime Emmys and the red carpet pre-show as a “hot mess.” Some people are calling it the worst awards show of the year.
Here is a sampling of what some people on Twitter are saying about Osbourne and Lopez at the 2014 Daytime Emmys:
“@TheTalk_CBS So are you going to allow Sharon Osbourne back on The Talk after her vulger performance at Daytime Emmys.#disgusting”
“Watched the Daytime Emmys just for Kathy Griffin the real winner was obviously Sharon Osbourne lol.”
“The Daytime Emmys is a streaming train wreck online. Could it possibly get worse? Yes, Sharon Osbourne has discovered there are no censors.”
“Lmao Sharon Osbourne needs to host next years Emmys!!!”
“Thought @OzzyOsbourne was bad — wait until you see what his wife @TheTalk_CBS’s @MrsSOsbourne did on the red carpet.”
“Sharon Osbourne just said the f word 4 times on the daytime Emmys. It’s not televised so Yolo!”
From the Daytime Emmys official Facebook page:
“They shouldn’t be allowed on stage with their dirty mouths! Next year don’t invite Sharon Osbourne she embarrassed herself with her mouth!!!!!!!!!
“OMG… Sharon Osbourne!!!! Freakin hilarious!!!”
“The language! please next year please no cursing!”
“Maybe you should get Mario to do the red carpet interviews next year!”
“How about Mario next year as Host.”
“Please have Mario host or do the red carpet show next year!”
“Congrats. Mario. You are the best interviewer on tv.”
“I happened to be staying at the Beverly Hilton. They had a place for the hotel guests to stand & meet the celebrities. (Their was only about 10 of us total and 5 were my family). The celebrities were extremely nice & signed autographs, took photos, etc. Mario walked past 4 times & total blew everyone off!”
“He is so into himself. When they said Extra won.. he went straight to where the camera was instead of to the stage.”
