This interview is part of a series focusing on candidates in the running for the 2014 ENnie Awards. The Gen Con EN World RPG Awards (the “ENnies”) are an annual fan-based celebration of excellence in tabletop role-playing gaming, with voting beginning 7 a.m. Central on Sunday, July 20 through 7 p.m. Central on Wednesday, July 30. The winners will be announced at Gen Con, the Grand Hall at the Historic Union Station on Friday, August 15. To vote, see http://www.ennie-awards.com/vote/. In this installment I interview popular interview subject and friend of the column, Nolan T. Jones, co-creator of Roll20.net.
Michael Tresca (MT): Tell us about your company.
Nolan T. Jones (NTJ): The ORR Group, LLC, is myself and my college roommates Riley Dutton and Richard Zayas. We love gaming.
MT: Tell us about your nominated products/site.
NTJ: Roll20.net is a free-to-use online virtual tabletop with a rapidly growing community of players.
MT: What distinguishes your entries from your competitors?
NTJ: We’re lucky to have a really impressive scope– both internally and externally. By focusing on being the best possible “tabletop” instead of trying to emulate a particular game, we’ve created a tool set with broad use… and as such our population is huge and continues to expand in all sorts of exciting ways!
MT: What enhancements will you be producing for the remainder of this year?
NTJ: We’re working on bettering card decks and improving publisher support for module creation.
MT: Have you participated in any recent Kickstarters? Are there any upcoming Kickstarters on the horizon?
NTJ: There have been many, many virtual tabletop crowdfunding efforts throughout our two and a half years of existence. I’m not sure which are most worth focusing on outside of Roll20– I simply know that we as Roll20 have to continue focusing on being easy-to-use in order to stay the best solution for a majority of gamers.
MT: What do you think of the new edition of D&D?
NTJ: We would love for the world’s most popular roleplaying game to have officially licensed products for sale on the internet’s most popular virtual tabletop.
MT: Will you be at Gen Con? Where? Will any new products debut at Gen Con?
NTJ: *We will be! We’ll have a panel about Roll20, as well as a panel about RPG games influencing comics (where I’ll be discussing our series “House of ORR” alongside other fantasy webcomics creators like Scott Kurtz!). As far as products go, we’ll see what Marketplace items come together in the next month…
MT: Where can we find out more about your company online?
MT: Anything else you’d like to share?
NTJ: We’re excited for another Gen Con to be upon us, and are looking forward to soaking in as much gaming as possible.
