Watch out European SUV diesel’s, Grand Cherokee is a contender with V-6 diesel, 8-speed automatic transmission and four corner air suspension. The 3.0LV-6 ECODiesel has 240 horsepower and 420 torque, with the same towing capacity as the Hemi, at 7200 lbs of trailer. The EPA rates the diesel for 28 mpg on the highway, my highway driving was over 30 mpg. The diesel is quiet and smooth with the 8-speed tranny, though its $4500 option is higher than the option on a Ram 1500.
SUV’s are filling the gap when you can’t afford a car and a truck. With good fuel mileage and towing ability, SUV’s are gaining on the car market. MSRP is $53,685 but that’s for a loaded Overland 4×4 package with my favorite “Adaptive Cruise Control” that locks the cruise control on the vehicle in front of you, slowing down, speeding up and braking on it’s own. Almost hands free driving, but the option list goes on, with air suspension that you dial in from snow, sand, rock, mud etc. controlling height, wheel slip and transmission gear.
Of course remote start, leave the key fob in your pocket and you just push a button to start, push a button on the door to lock, with heated seats, both rows, a heated steering wheel, power tilt telescoping steering column, paddle gear shifting in the steering wheel. Seats 5 with a Dual-Pane Panoramic Sunroof to see the mountains or the starts. For safety, Bi- Xenon HID headlights, Forward Collision Warning with Crash Mitigation, brake assist, Blind Spot Cross Path Detection. The 8-speed transmission rotary shift knob takes some getting use to. The seven inch Multi-View screen is very usable and one of the easiest to navigate to the screens you need.
With a cap less diesel fill and DEF fill in the same fuel door, works well in the fuel islands that have DEF at the pump. Not sure if the cap less fuel spigot will keep the dirt out. Might mean more fuel filter changes.
