Rain forced the postponement of the Funny Car final and Pro Stock semis and final at Brainerd International Raceway Sunday, but Morgan Lucas emerged victorious in Top Fuel in his family-sponsored Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals.
The Funny Car final between John Force and Ron Capps, as well as the Pro Stock semifinals and final were postponed by NHRA officials due to darkness and inclement weather on Sunday. Those categories will be completed during designated qualifying rounds during the 60th annual Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals, August 27th through September 1st at Lucas Oil Raceway Park at Indianapolis.
Lucas took home the Top Fuel Wally in dramatic fashion, with his engine erupting in flames as he crossed the finish line. Lucas, who is racing part-time this season, earned round wins over Bob Vandergriff, Steve Torrence and Antron Brown to reach the finals against Doug Kalitta.
“It’s fun,” said Lucas of his schedule. “This is really what I was hoping it would be, just to come out here and have fun, and when you go rounds that is just the added value to it. I am just really lucky that Lucas Oil and GEICO support me. Racing guys like Doug (Kalitta) and Antron (Brown), they are number one and two in points, they are the best. To win this race again is just a really cool feeling.”
Force and Capps will complete the Funny Car finals on Saturday, August 30th during the second qualifying session at Indy. Force advanced to the final with round wins over Bob Bode, Del Worsham and Tommy Johnson Jr., while Capps earned round wins over Jeff Arend, Jack Beckman and Alexis DeJoria to reach the final round.
When Pro Stock racing resumes at Indy, Jason Line will face Dave River, while Vincent Nobile and Jeg Coughlin will decide the other Pro Stock semifinal. The Pro Stock semis and final will be contested during the two Sunday qualifying sessions at Indy (August 31st).
