To be honest, I didn’t have high expectations when I was asked to drive the 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander. I really have not driven many cars in the Mitsubishi lineup and I don’t often hear the name. Regardless, I went into our drive with an open mind. We needed a SUV for our family roadtrip to the mountains of Montana and this rig fit the bill. Not only was I really surprised with the performance, the comfort swayed my opinion of Mitsubishi.
Let’s start with how roomy this little SUV is. We had a large amount of luggage for our family of four for our week away. It all fit so easily in the back with the optional thrid row seats folded down. With the automatic open and close of the back door, the kids were easily able to help load up for the trip.
Once we hit the road, we had the opportunity to check out the cruise control features and the “lane beepers” while on the highway. This is the first time I had experienced a cruise control that senses the car in front of you. It will automatically slow down if the car in front of you is going slower than your set speed. I never realized how much this little feature comes into play. It was so nice to not have to consistently adjust the settings manually. The lane beepers are just what they sound like. An alarm will sound if you start to drift toward a line without your blinker on. This helps to keep you aware of distracted driving. It also came to our rescue when we hit a heavy downpour of rain. We could not visually see the lines on the road with the rain but the lane beepers kept us in line.
The ride was quite smooth. When getting onto the interstate you could hear the engine accelerating but it did not abruptly shift. It was actually very surprised at the speed we were going when it felt like it was slower since the transitions were so smooth and easy.
Not all of the best features of this SUV could be “experienced”. It’s the hidden safety features that really made me feel secure in this vehicle for our long 7 hour drive. Things like:
- Hill Start Assist
- Anti-Lock Brakes
- Stability Control
- Traction Control
- Tire Pressure Monitors
- Side Curtain Airbags
- Front Seat Mounted Side Airbags
- Driver’s Knee Airbags
- Advanced Dual Stage Front Airbags
- Alarm System
- Rise Body Construction
We took this on and off road, through sunshine and thunderstorms. We always felt very safe and the aerodynamic design handled very well in high winds as well.
The extras in comfort seal the deal on this model. The seats were all super comfortable, and lots of room for each of us. The satellite radio and navigation system are small details that make an ordinary vehicle feel extraordinary.
I could go on and on about this car and all the little reasons why we fell in love with it but the bottom line is, it is stylish, safe and comfortable. Perfect for families who love to travel. (Read more about our adventure in the Mitsubishi Outlander on Daily Dish Magazine)
