Friday was day three of the 2014 U.S.A. Track & Field Outdoor Championships at Hornet Stadium located on the campus of Sacramento State University. The day’s early competition were events in the men’s and women’s decathlon and heptathlon. The men’s and women’s 110 meter hurdles took place around noon followed by the men’s discus throw and the women’s high jump competitions. At three o’clock the men’s decathlon pole vault took place. At 3:30 the women’s shot put in the heptathlon occurred out in the warm up track area.
The highlights of the meet were the finals of the men’s discus throw which was won by Hayden Reed (62.19m throw) who takes home the gold followed by the silver Bryan Powlen (61.0m) and bronze Mason Finley (61.05m). At four o’clock the meat and potatoes of the track & field events occurred. Lolo Jones placed second in the qualifying for the women’s 100 Meter Hurdles (12.62). Queen Harris finished first with a time of 12.56. The women’s pole vault finals took place as well with Jenn Suhr winning the gold with a vault of 15-1, Sandi Morris took the silver (14-11) and Becky Holliday went home with a bronze (14-7 1/4).
The men’s Triple Jump Finals took place in the evening with Will Claye winning the gold (17.75m), Christian Taylor finished with a silver (17.37m) and Chris Bernard left with a bronze (17.10m). Friday night’s meets ended with three medal finals. First was the Men’s 100 Meter Dash and the gold medalist was Mike Rodgers (10.09), Ryan Bailey finished with the silver (10.23) and Sean McLean (10.26) took home the bronze. The women’s finals in the 100 Meter Dash were won by Tianna Bartoletta with the time of 11.15 and the gold medal.
The Women’s 5,000 Meter Run gold medalist was Molly Huddle (15:01.56), silver for Shannon Rowbury (15:01.71) and Marielle Hall with the bronze (15:12.79). The final event of the night was the Men’s 5,000 Meter Run and the winner was Bernard Laget with the gold (13:31.41) followed by Andrew Bumbalough who won the silver and Hassan Mead who edged out fourth place finalist Ryan Hill by a fraction of a second for the bronze. Final attendance numbers for Friday were 8,131 with a total of 13.955 for the first two days at Sacramento State.
