It’s Halloween time and what better way to set off that perfect Halloween costume than with a heavy metal soundtrack to match. The varied genres of metal provide musical accompaniment to virtually any Halloween costuming idea. Here are a few ideas:
Zombie/Vampire/Other Horror Movie Icon Costume- Alice Cooper
Alice Cooper is known as the godfather of shock rock for a reason and he’s a great all-purpose musical accompanist to virtually any horror-themed costume. Whether you’re rocking the scary spider look with “The Black Widow,” the crazy mental patient with “Ballad of Dwight Fry,” or sporting bolts in your neck with “Feed My Frankenstein,” Alice has you covered.
Homicidal Body Modification Fetishist Costume- Dee Snider/Twisted Sister
As the lead singer for Twisted Sister, Dee Snider pulled off “scary drag queen” better than anyone in history. As a solo artist and filmmaker, he brought the truly terrifying Captain Howdy from Twisted Sister’s “Horror-teria” to life as a demented body modification enthusiast in the movie “Strangeland.” Both the “Horror-Teria” trilogy from Twisted Sister and Snider’s own chilling “Inconclusion” from the “Strangeland” soundtrack work well for this costume.
Pirate Costume- Alestorm
If your costuming plans include an eye patch and a parrot, you’ll definitely want to download a couple of albums from Scottish metal act Alestorm. Self-described as “True Scottish Pirate Metal”, Alestorm’s tales of sword fights, wenches, and gallons of ale will set the stage perfectly for that Jack Sparrow costume.
Viking Costume- Amon Amarth
The popular History Channel show has given Vikings a newfound popularity and, while there are plenty of bands in the surprisingly robust “Viking metal” genre, no one does it better or with more popularity than Amon Amarth. While their band’s name may be taken from the fantasy works of J.R.R. Tolkien, songs like “Father of the Wolf,” “Wrath of the Norseman,” and “Twilight of the Thunder God,” leave no doubt where their lyrical muse lies. The members of Amon Amarth, and their epic facial hair, are a good launching point for someone wishing to add that extra touch to his Viking Halloween costume.
Soldier Costume- Sabaton
For anyone thinking of dressing up in historically accurate soldier’s garb, there’s Swedish power metal group Sabaton. The band’s songs portray real historical battles and regiments and their music videos are surprisingly well costumed. Surprise friends at your Halloween party with not only a convincing costume but some details about the historical battles your character may have fought.
Gothic Leather Fetish Costume- Tristania
If your Halloween party is of a decidedly more adult nature, your best bet is Norwegian symphonic metal band, Tristania. The key here is to download Tristania albums from 2007’s “Illumination” and before, prior to the departure of operatic vocalist Vibeke Stene and a change in direction for the band.
Sexy (Insert Profession Here) Costume- Steel Panther
No Halloween costume says “I’m going for the cheese” like the sexy plumber/fireman/nurse/cheerleader getup. Likewise, no band does a better job of lampooning the sex-drenched cheese of hair metal while actually putting out some pretty rocking tunes like Steel Panther. If you’re going to go for goofy, you may as well go all out and Steel Panther is as all out as they come?
