A 911 pizza order by a domestic violence victim is causing buzz on the Internet today. A woman used a call for a pizza delivery to call 911 instead. A former 911 operator shared about the call in an AskReddit last week. The question asked in the thread was for 911 operators. They were asked about the call they would never forget. E! Online shared the story told by Crux1836 on Oct. 29.
Reddit user Crux1836 is not a 911 operator anymore, but they shared the story of one 911 call they received 10 years ago. Crux1836’s identity is Keith Weisinger. Ten years ago, he was working the graveyard shift as a 911 operator. He received a call near midnight one night, and he had to quickly assess the situation.
A woman called in ordering a large pizza. Prank calls are common for 911 operators, but Weisinger stayed on the line and talked the woman through her situation without her revealing anything that might allow her attacker she called the police. Weisinger shared the conversation he remembered having with the woman to Reddit users. It went as follows:
“911, where is you emergency?”
“123 Main St.”
“Ok, what’s going on there?”
“I’d like to order a pizza for delivery.” (oh great, another prank call).
“Ma’am, you’ve reached 911″
“Yeah, I know. Can I have a large with half pepperoni, half mushroom and peppers?”
“Ummm…. I’m sorry, you know you’ve called 911 right?”
“Yeah, do you know how long it will be?”
“Ok, Ma’am, is everything ok over there? do you have an emergency?”
“Yes, I do.”
“..And you can’t talk about it because there’s someone in the room with you?” (moment of realization)
“Yes, that’s correct. Do you know how long it will be?”
“I have an officer about a mile from your location. Are there any weapons in your house?”
“Can you stay on the phone with me?”
“Nope. See you soon, thanks.”
After the call ended, the 911 operator pulled up the woman’s address, and he discovered that several domestic abuse calls had come in from that address in the past. This woman needed help, but the situation was so dire that she could not allow her boyfriend at the time that she was calling the police for assistance.
Police did arrive at the home. Weisenger shared a bit more about this incident in an interview. He said the following about this call, according to the Washington Post:
“The officer arrives and finds a couple, female was kind of banged up and boyfriend was drunk. Officer arrests him after she explains that the boyfriend had been beating her for a while. I thought she was pretty clever to use that trick. Definitely one of the most memorable calls.”
Weisinger has no idea what happened to the woman after her 911 call. Weisinger worked as a 911 operator for three years between 2004 and 2006. At that time, he attended law school, and he is now a lawyer with the United States Environmental Protection Agency. In an interview with Buzzfeed, he revealed that 90% of the domestic abuse calls into 911 involve a male abusing a female.
If a male had called in that night ordering a pizza delivery, the 911 call would have gone very differently. Weisinger might have thought the call was definitely a prank. The woman’s call for help here was heard. Weisinger’s quick thinking put an end to the abuse that night.
What do you think of this 911 pizza order call? Was it a smart move by the woman?
