The Street Church is anything, but your stereotypical church. It is a church without any doors or windows. It is located in the middle of a park in downtown Colorado Springs, Colorado.
I have been writing about churches, pastors and highlighting Christian testimonies for several years now. Every church body has a unique personality and style. That is what makes them so extraordinary.
I discovered a church in my hometown that is located in the middle of a park. This park has become a gathering place where men and women congregate every Sunday evening to pray, worship and fellowship.
They call it The Street Church, and it was founded in 2006. It is comprised of a group of dedicated men and women that gather every Sunday, rain or shine, in a public park to worship, praise God and to pray.
The Street Church is a nondenominational 501c3 nonprofit charity that meets regularly for worship, study, prayer, and fellowship. It is staffed by volunteers and their parishioners are comprised primarily of the very poor and homeless.
Their mission statement reads as follows, “We are called to the streets of our city; to feed and clothe the poor, to preach the gospel, and give hope through the Lord Jesus Christ.”
Sounds like a new concept, but it really isn’t. Jesus Himself, believed in taking the message to where the people were. Jesus met people right where they were and preached in a variety of places and that is what this church does, it meets people right where they are. It is a church where everyone is welcomed.
But, can they really call themselves a church if you don’t have a building? In the Bible there are three words that best define the church: kyriakos, qahal, and ekklesia.
The word “church” comes from the Middle English “chiriche” which is a derivative of the Greek word kyriakos which means “the Lord’s house.” And, in the Old Testament, the Hebrew word qahal is used and it translates as congregation or assembly. Last, but not least is the word, ekklesia, a Greek word that literally means “to be called out”, in other words, the church (or ekklesia) is the community of people called out by God.
Christ said He would build His church on the rock of Peter’s confession of faith that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God (Matthew 16:15-19). Christ also said that the church is the most influential body in helping a person face their sin (Matthew 18:15-17). And, in the Book of Acts we learn that the church is where believers are baptized, learn doctrine, share in fellowship, break bread, pray and worship together, help those in need (Acts 2:40-47), are taught and called Christians (Acts 11:25-26), pray for specific people (Acts 12:5). The Street Church in Colorado Springs meet these definitions in every way.
Since April 2007, Anther’s Park has been the site of many songs, prayers, sermons, dinners and countless memories.
They meet every Sunday at 5pm at Antlers Park in Colorado Springs, Colorado to worship, study God’s word, and to fellowship.
