“We have entered a most dangerous period in U.S. history,” he said, “And nobody knows thus far how it will turn out in the end.” These are the words of a former Obama supporter who has turned negative on the president and current leadership in Congress, as well as the Supreme Court.
“The thing that complicates the entire fiasco,” he continued, “Is that nobody in government seems to be telling the truth. When the people lose faith in government officials to be honest and straightfoward with them, one has to wonder if there is any way for the nation to survive.”
The person who uttered those words is an FDR Democrat, a Great Society footsoldier for Lyndon Johnson. He reads some of the most progressive/collectivist “news” magazines in the country. And he has been a reliable source for this writer, an accurate gauge of the sentiments and views of the modern progressive movement as they pertain to the current administration and its programs.
But perhaps one of the most telling features of his mindset is that he is a strong supporter of the U.S. military. He is quick to say that prior to LBJ, Democrats by and large were just as supportive of the armed forces as the Republicans. The evidence for this point of view can be seen in FDR, Harry Truman, JFK, and to a degree LBJ. But then it all began to change. During the War in Viet Nam, the Democratic Party became a favored hangout for those who protested the war and who became known as peaceniks who displayed open disdain for the men and women in uniform.
My source, however, never allowed himself to be aligned with that element but maintained his belief in a strong military and the values that differentiated the U.S. from other superpowers in the world. And while he is deeply troubled by the manner in which the Obama administration conducts foreign policy, his discontent does not stop with military issues. He believes that Obama botched a golden opportunity to make needed corrections in the manner in which healthcare is delivered in this nation. The nation did not need an entirely new system, he insists. All we needed was a handful of new laws that would make the American system better, such as covering preexisting conditions.
And the VA hospital debacle? Not only appalling but unnecessary. He says that the VA disaster is a perfect example of government run healthcare. But more importantly he supports giving veterans vouchers that allow them to get their healthcare anywhere, not just at the VA. The VA debacle, he says, came at a most inopportune time for Obama, who has been attempting to tout the “successes” of Obamacare when there are actually none or only a few. The VA only serves as a stark reminder of what government healthcare is like.
With the VA mess, Americans have had the opportunity to see for themselves where Obamacare will lead the entirety of the American healthcare system. You want “free” healthcare provided by the hard-earned tax dollars of your fellow citizens? Then get set by taking a cold, hard look at the VA hospitals. That is in your future. You will be in long waiting lines even though you are sick. You may die before they get around to seeing you. Your doctor doesn’t know you, so they have no personal incentive to be thorough in their care. And you will have to put up with filth in the hallways, urine and fecal material around and about that hasn’t been cleaned up, infectious material that hasn’t been properly disposed of, and a host of other inexcusable horrors of a system that is in shambles.
No wonder Obama had to create a crisis elsewhere that the media hounds would surely go barking after. He had to get the sickening headlines about the VA out of the news. The swap of five hardened Taliban terrorists for an American soldier who appears to have been a traitor would do the trick. Ever since this has been in the news, no news has been reported about the VA.
But as long as I have opportunity to write, I will keep reminding Americans about the dangers of the VA and the lessons it holds for Obamacare. And I will keep writing about Democrats who are finally waking up to the truth, and turning against Obama.
