Douglas Scharre, M.D., of the Division of Cognitive Neurology at Ohio State University developed a self-administered, quick and easy test to assess brain function. The self-test is called the e Self-Administered Gerocognitive Examination (SAGE) test. After clicking on the link, arrow down to: “Let us calculate your brain age and brain power.” The SAGE has been validated and standardized to take in privacy. Oftentimes those with cognitive decline and/or memory problems are not comfortable taking tests in clinical settings (i.e., public) such as a physician’s office or medical clinic. Taking the SAGE in a private setting affords more accurate results. It takes about 15-minutes to complete, provides immediate results and is free.
The SAGE is an effective tool to assess your own brain function or that of someone who may be experiencing cognitive decline. The self-test is designed for private use or by clinicians assessing brain function or treatment progress. It has 12-questions and is available in four different versions all of which measure: • Executive problem solving and memory • Reasoning and computation • Language and verbal fluency • Visuospatial skills • Orientation (to place and time for example)
The Journal of Neuropsychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences recently published the SAGE research suggesting that the SAGE may be useful for detecting early signs of cognitive decline, Alzheimer’s and dementia. When taken at home the SAGE should not be used to self-diagnose brain function problems. Taking the test at home can assist in determining whether or not to meet with a medical professional. Only a medical professional can diagnose problems in brain function.
Brain functioning is a serious matter. Using the SAGE is a helpful tool for all of us in assessing whether we are up to par in cognitive functioning or not. As stated earlier, please do not self-diagnose nor diagnose someone taking the test because you suspect he or she may be experiencing a reduction in brain function. If serious questions or concerns arise seek the assistance of a medical professional.
