In honor of June brides, we take a look at the history of getting engaged with Tiffany & Co. It all started with six little prongs and a brilliant idea. In 1886 Founder Charles Lewis Tiffany introduced the world to the “Tiffany Setting” elevating engagement rings to a new height. A soaring six-prong platinum design, displaying an immaculate round brilliant solitaire was unheard of at a time when rings were bezel set. Like a true classic, it began as a trend that has survived unchanged until today, its name known the world over. Brooklyn Decker, who celebrated her fifth wedding anniversary this April is just one of the celebrities who wear the famous setting. I sat down with the company who started it all to learn more about their standing as a leader in the engagement department.
I was first introduced to the Tiffany Setting on my date with diamonds. It is striking, yet still modest even with the largest stone. Its genius is subtle and in turn hard to replicate. The knife edge band and unexpected curve at the base of the prongs seem like a marriage of decades so intuitive you would think it was crafted today. From there, I tried on settings of differing style, color and commitment, at one stage having over one million dollars on my hand.
Choosing an engagement ring is a transformative experience, much like finding a signature fragrance. The individual influences the ring in the way a scent changes when it meets your skin. The ones that come to life on your hand are the ones you dream about. For me, two of those were done in the Soleste setting. One with an immaculate 4.3 carat round brilliant white diamond and another 3.4 carat yellow cushion-cut, a smaller version of the illustrious 128.54 carat Tiffany Diamond. Never having envisioned a colored stone for myself, when I stepped in front of a full-length mirror as San Francisco Group Director for Tiffany & Co. Ray Raby encouraged I saw how it looked like a part of me.
The Tiffany & Co. promise is quality overall. Their rigorous selection process values cut over carat weight to ensure the most dazzling diamonds. In color and clarity, they only allow stones within the first six levels of grading, assigning the lower rating when it falls on the borderline. Exceptional beauty, trust and integrity are their standards, setting up a bond to build a promising start for a lifetime together.
Today’s courtships are told in part through social media and Tiffany & Co. is a resource for the ring but also the romance. Their site whatmakeslovetrue.com is designed with the heart in mind.
