On September 11 The Hollywood Reporter exclusively revealed that actor Theo James will play the lead role in the fifth “Underworld” film, which follows vampires and their fight against werewolves for territory. James had previously appeared in “Underworld: Awakening,” the fourth film in the franchise, where he played a new character trying to help Selene with her quests. Actress Kate Beckinsale, who has played the lead role of Selene in the past four films, will not return for a fifth movie.
James plays David, a vampire who follows Selene to a building where she had a vision and ultimately discovers her daughter Eve. David helps Selene and Eve try to rescue Eve’s father Michael but he escapes on his own at the end of the film before they can be reunited. James will star in the new film to expand the universe of the films beyond Michael and Selene, and tell new story of the fight between lycans and vampires.
The fourth film, released in 2013, contained a clause for James to appear in further films since the film ends on a cliffhanger. The new film will follow David as he is joined by not one but two new female characters on a different adventure. Cory Goodman has been hired to write the script for the film, with filming scheduled to begin next spring. The previous installments of the film were completed outside Vancouver.
James most recently appeared as tough guy Four (Tobias) in the action film “Divergent,” based on the best-selling young adult novel by Veronica Roth. The sequel, “Insurgent,” recently wrapped filming and James will also return to both “Allegiant” films set for release in 2016 and 2017. The film franchise so far has earned over two hundred and fifty million dollars, while the most recent film in the “Underworld” franchise earned one hundred and sixty million.
On September 11 Variety also reported that James has many films already in the works, including the films “Franny” and “London Fields,” which are both scheduled for release next year. James is the first cast member confirmed for the film, which still does not have a title or a director attached. Gary Lucchesi and Tom Rosenberg will produce the film for Lakeshore Entertainment, who also produced the other four films.
It’s possible that the film will explore David’s origin as a vampire and his history with the vampire and lycan war. Selene won’t appear in the film, so it’s unlikely that David or Eve would appear or that storyline will be continued. It’s possible that this film will follow a similar timeline to the previous films, or explain the lycan and vampire war from a different perspective.
