Actress Danièle Watts, 28, perhaps best known for her performance as CoCo in the film “Django Unchained,” and now perhaps even more famous for posting to her Facebook page in September that she was accosted, handcuffed and detained in Los Angeles by “2 police officers from the Studio City Police Department,” after the cops mistook her for being a prostitute – was charged on Oct. 21 with lewd conduct following that incident, according to Fox News. The lewd conduct in question was her romanticizing with her husband, Brian James Lucas, 43, in a parked car in a Studio City parking lot in September.
Watts intimated at the time that she was a victim of racial profiling in that incident as she’s black and her husband is white. She was indeed handcuffed and detained when police on the scene witnessed her and her husband in a very public display of affection.
Also charged yesterday with lewd conduct was her husband. Watts and Lucas are free pending their arraignments in the case. Although a misdemeanor, the charge could carry with it six month prison sentences if the love birds are found guilty.
Watts claimed that she and her husband were only kissing at the time. But photos taken by a witness on the scene and provided to TMZ and ultimately shared by the Daily News depicts Watts sitting on Lucas’ lap and straddling him.
TMZ reported that they had the pictures; and according to the entertainment website, it looked like the couple was having sex. “Watts was ‘grinding’ on her boyfriend’s lap, according to the eyewitness. The witness on the scene also said that Watts’ breasts were in full view to passersby. Reportedly, an individual from a business in the area even asked the couple to stop having sex in the car before the cops had to get involved.
Audio recordings from the police encounter hear Watts repeatedly refusing to show her identification to the arresting officer, Los Angeles Police Sgt. Jim Parker, who maintained he was responding to a complaint about a lewd scene.
“I figured I could take care of this call and go get coffee and that was it,” Parker told the Los Angeles Times. “I was trying to ID them and leave — nobody wanted them arrested for having sex in public. But then she went into her tirade.” ~ The Daily News
Watts said that when approached by the officers, she refused to provide any identification. That’s when the police handcuffed her hands behind her back and put the actress into the back seat of their police car until they could get things sorted out. No too long afterwards, police released her.
The actress, who has appeared on TV and the big screen, also posted images from her arrest on her Facebook page. The pictures show her standing before the arresting officer as she appeared crying, handcuffed, and wearing shorts, a t-shirt and running shoes.
Today I was handcuffed and detained by 2 police officers from the Studio City Police Department after refusing to agree that I had done something wrong by showing affection, fully clothed, in a public place.
When the officer arrived, I was standing on the sidewalk by a tree. I was talking to my father on my cell phone. I knew that I had done nothing wrong, that I wasn’t harming anyone, so I walked away.
A few minutes later, I was still talking to my dad when 2 different police officers accosted me and forced me into handcuffs. ~ Danièle Watts/Facebook
In addition to possible prison time, the couple could also be facing $1,000 fines if convicted. For more on Watts’ story, see the video accompanying this article.
