This weekend is the second weekend of the fall fair at Afton Alps. You’ll be able to buy new and used snowboards and boots, plus downhill ski, boots, and poles, and if you look carefully, some Nordic skis as well. There will also be some activities for the kids, including a jumpy house, a search for candy in the hay, and pumpkin painting. The whole family can also go “all aboard” a hay wagon.
For the adults, though, the fair offers a treat not usually scene at such events around here: The chance to take in some new beer and wine. Brewers from several states will be represented, including Empyrean (Nebraska), Tallgrass (Kansas), Kona (Hawaii), Oskar (Colorado), and Goose Island (Illinois). Of course there will also be a number of Minnesota craft brewers, including Excelsior, Indeed, Lucid, Mankota, Surly, and the curiously named (for Minnesota) Badger Hill.
For wines, you’ll be able to select from Columbia, Darkhorse, Ecco Domani, Polka Dot, and William Hill. As you might expect, none of those wines are from the Midwest. But you’ll find eight different varietals, from cabernet sauvignon to zinfandel.
The beer and wine fest will run from noon until 3 p.m. on Saturday, and it will you back $15.
A word to the wise is order: Drinking under the influence is never a good idea, and that’s probably doubly true this weekend. Local law enforcement knows that there will be an increased amount of traffic near Afton, so there may be some increase in patrols.
