Lookout! The dachshunds are coming! Wiener Fest 2014 takes place on Saturday, October 4, at Wolf Pen Creek Park in College Station, Texas. Just as in past years, Wiener Fest 2014 is not just for wiener dogs. The festival celebrates all dogs and dog owners with races, contests, food, music, and fun. Proceeds benefit the Aggieland Humane Society.
Each year Wiener Fest hosts a doggie costume contest as well as races throughout the day featuring dachshunds and wanna-be-wiener dogs in various categories. The day begins with a people race (5K walk/run) at 7:30 a.m. (registration at 6:45 a.m.). People and their pets cross the starting line at 7:45 a.m. You can bypass the early registration time by preregistering for any of the events online at the Wiener Fest website. Kids’ activities, entertainment, vendor booths, and other events follow at 8:00 a.m. Back by popular demand, the band Figgy Puddin’ will provide musical entertainment for the day of the festival.
Dogs and their people can take advantage of a practice run to get in shape if they choose. Wiener Fest Boot Camp will be held on Friday evening before the festival from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Boot campers can practice races, preregister for Saturday’s events, and get to know sponsors and other attendees.
For the fourth year, the Brazos Bark and Build competition will add to the activities at Wiener Fest. The American Institute of Architects’ Emerging Professionals Committee started the Brazos Bark and Build competition in 2011 as a fundraiser for Aggieland Humane Society. Anyone can bid on the dog houses or related furniture through a silent auction held both online and at Wolf Pen Creek Park the day of Wiener Fest. Get a sneak peek at the dog houses and dog furniture at Post Oak Mall in College Station the week prior to Wiener Fest. To find out more about bidding, see the Bark and Build website. Winning bidders of the unique dog houses or dog furniture will be able to take home the entries from Wiener Fest to house their canine family members in style.
The Bark Leader Campaign has become a big part of Weiner Fest in the last several years. In the Bark Leader Campaign, people nominate their dogs online and establish a First Giving page that tells why their pets should be Bark Leaders for the shelter during the coming year. “Votes” for Bark Leader stardom come in the form of donations to the shelter’s operation. Dogs selected as Bark Leaders will earn a professional photo shoot, receive Aggie apparel, and serve as the face of Aggieland Humane Society during the coming year.
You don’t need to bring a dog along to enjoy Wiener Fest. Dogs and people of all sorts show up at the shelter’s largest annual fundraiser of the year. The festival is sponsored by numerous businesses, individuals, media outlets, and others.
Wiener Fest began in 2007 as a celebration of all things dachshund. Before long, non-dachshund owners were howling to be included in the fun. In 2009, the event opened to dogs of all types and has been growing in popularity every year.
