According to a July 17 report from Cageside Seats, this weekend’s WWE Battleground special event will feature an intriguing WWE Divas title match, as AJ Lee puts her championship belt on the line against former NXT superstar, Paige. Lee, 27, recently came back from a two-month hiatus, and she immediately captured the WWE Divas championship from Paige upon her return to the ring. At present time, it’s clear Paige and AJ Lee are the best of the best in the WWE Divas division.
Unfortunately, the WWE Divas haven’t received the respect they deserve over the past few years. The ladies always bring it just as hard as their male counterparts, but their matches are often viewed as nothing more than bathroom breaks during pay-per-view events. That won’t be the case with Paige vs. Lee, as they are two of the most technically-sound performers in WWE Divas history.
What is interesting about the Paige vs. Lee matchup is the way the WWE has hyped it. Just two weeks ago on WWE Monday Night Raw, Paige seemed to align with Lee when the two were spotted together helping each other out in a match against Naomi and Cameron. Paige and Lee shook hands, and it seemed as if the WWE was going to put them together as tag-team partners.
That wouldn’t end up happening, but Paige and Lee were seen the following week on WWE Monday Night Raw exchanging compliments to each other. Since Paige and Lee had been getting along, not many fans thought they would get booked to wrestle each other at WWE Battleground. How will the match go down? In all likelihood, Lee will continue to hold onto the WWE Divas title because she’s a fan favorite and a grizzled veteran.
As long as Paige performs well, she won’t lose much ground in the division even with a loss. In other WWE Divas action at Battleground, former teammates Naomi and Cameron are set to collide. Naomi and Cameron have been feuding for the past few weeks, after their tag-team split up. On paper, this match isn’t as high-level as Paige vs. Lee because neither one is as good on the mic or inside the ring.
Elsewhere at WWE Battleground, Jack Swagger takes on Rusev and Dean Ambrose battles Seth Rollins. WWE Battleground, which goes down July 20 in Tampa, airs on pay-per-view and also on the WWE Network. The upcoming special event will be the second WWE Battleground in WWE history. The first one went down last October, but all future WWE Battleground events are expected to go down in July.
