On November 6 this year, it is time to grab your popcorn and hold on to your seats, as the Alexander Wang x H&M highly-anticipated collection collaboration will hit around 250 stores worldwide and online. ‘Wonder’ designer, Wang, who’s not only behind his namesake label, but also the man at the helm of Balenciaga. Who would’ve dreamed that the H&M and Alexander Wang would collaborate on such a chic, edgy 61-piece Collection. Well, After a few teaser Instagram videos and pictures here and there, they certainly didn’t disappoint, as this is the most highly anticipated collaboration to hit store and digital shelves. Guess What?! The pieces are affordably priced between $130-$300.
H&M’s take on the Alexander Wang. ‘This is the first time that an American designer teams up with H&M, and the Alexander Wang x H&M collection will feature apparel and accessories for both men and women. Typical for his irreverent approach, Alexander Wang will propose a new take on the lifestyle product offering that goes beyond fashion. The New York based fashion designer’s eponymous brand has firmly established itself by perpetually evolving and re-contextualizing the urban uniform, since it was launched on the runway in 2007. Alexander Wang’s core sensibility is a reflection on contrasts, blending seamlessly between the refined and the imperfect. His collections have an unprecious outlook on fashion, and always reflect a sense of ease.’
‘Alexander Wang is one of the most important voices in fashion today. He understands exactly what people want to wear and does it with an energy and passion that’s infectious. It feels incredible to be collaborating with him this year,’ said Margareta Van Den Bosch, H&M’s creative advisor.
Alexander Wang, tells ‘H&M Life’, ‘I am honored to be a part of H&M’s designer collaborations. The work with their team is an exciting, fun process. They are very open to push boundaries and to set a platform for creativity. This will be a great way for a wider audience to experience elements of the Alexander Wang brand and lifestyle.’
Here’s what we already know about the collection:
- It’s heavily sport-themed
The first teaser, released via H&M’s Instagram back in July, showed a mini boxing gloves key ring and a punch bag. What could we deduce? That it is set to have a sporty, Athletic theme. The latest full-look images reaffirm just that – they’re set in a gymnasium with dumbbell weights in the background – as do the newly-released campaign images, which show Joan Smalls, Racquel Zimmerman and Isabeli Fontana playing American football, hockey and another sport.
- There’s certainly a lot of ‘Wang’s’ signature touch and influence
Obvious branding is really big right now – just look at the resurgence of the classic Calvin Klein sweater – and that has been noted by Mr Wang. As such, there is a lot of ‘Wang’ going on. From a grey marl sweater that takes its cue from the aforementioned iconic Klein design, to ‘Wang’ on jacket cuffs, beanies, sports bras legging knees and waistbands. It looks as if some of Wang’s signature design features will be present as well – including leather boxing shorts, croc effect, and the sheer stripe detailing from his spring/summer 2013 collection – and this collection has definitely got Wang’s design fingerprints all over it.
- There will be original designs
The New York-based designer was quick to point out the his H&M collaboration would include original pieces – unlike the retailer’s last collaboration with Isabel Marant, which was more of a ‘greatest hits for the high street’ collection. “I wanted to create a collection where most of the pieces have been designed from scratch. Rather than creating affordable versions of expensive items, I wanted to design true performance pieces that are within the natural price points of sportswear of H&M, so we were able to create the best version of these pieces, through our vocabulary,” he said when the partnership was announced.
- It may be sporty, but still rock ‘give you life’ heels
‘Taking sportswear to the next level!’ said H&M when they posted the below video to their Instagram. That may well be, but there’ll also be some decidedly un-sporty pieces in the collection. Including the pair of high-heeled pointed-toe lace-up boots that appear in the 15-second headache-inducing clip below (around 7 seconds in). Rumour has it Wang will also bring back his best selling ‘Freja’ boots, which first appeared as part of his spring/summer 2010 collection.
