While you were sleeping, another passenger jet disappeared from radar and there has been no word from the flight with 116 people on board since late last night. Air Algerie Flight 5017 was missing for hours before the news was made public, reports CTV News on July 24.
Air traffic control lost track of the Swiftair MD-83 about 50 minutes after it departed from Ougadougou at 9:55 p.m. on Wednesday. The plane was headed for Algiers, which would put the flight path over Mali, a place where terrorists have been building a presence lately.
According to NBC News this morning, the Air Algerie Jet was chartered by Spain’s SwiftAir. The Spanish charter company reports that the plane disappeared from the radar last night. Fox News reports that the plane disappeared over Northern Mali, which is a location that has fighting going on at this time.
The plane’s passenger’s manifest indicates that 110 passengers and six crew were on board the flight to Algiers, which was due to land at 1:10 a.m. on Thursday, but never made it.
There has been no communication from the plane since last contacted about 50 minutes after take-off. Air Algerie reports it has launched their emergency plan as a search and rescue gets underway for the missing flight.
This is the second airline to fall off the radar screen this month, as the Malaysian flight crashed when it was shot out the sky over the Russian-Ukraine border. Then there is Malaysian Flight 370 that has been missing for about five months after falling off the radar screen. Still there is no word on the fate of this missing flight.
The search for Malaysian 370 ill-fated flight has encompassed a good part of the Indian Ocean with still no signs of the plane or any of the 239 passengers on board that flight. Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 had 298 souls on board when it crashed in that wheat field in the Ukraine after being shot down.
The loss of life with the Malaysia flight disappearance and the recent Malaysia flight crash is tragic. The disappearance of this mornings Air Algeria plane was quickly followed by a search and rescue, but there is no word yet if they have spotted anything regarding the missing flight.
