The complete run of “Friends,” the beloved NBC sitcom which helped define the 90’s, will be arriving on Netflix in the US and Canada on January 1. This big announcement means that 10 seasons, 236 episodes and 83 hours’ worth of one of the most successful network comedies of all time will be available for Netflix subscribers’ binge-watching pleasure. Relive the fun with Ross, Monica, Chandler, Rachel, Joey and Phoebe starting next New Year’s Day.
In honor of this momentous occasion, Netflix has posted a brand new video, featuring a rendition of the show’s theme, “I’ll Be There For You,” by the theme’s songwriters The Rembrandts. The video also features an appearance by James Michael Tyler as Gunther, the disgruntled manager of the gang’s favorite coffeehouse Central Perk. “Friends” originally aired on NBC from 1994 to 2004 and launched the careers of Jennifer Aniston, Matthew Perry, Matt LeBlanc, David Schwimmer, Courteney Cox and Lisa Kudrow, who played a group of aspiring 20-somethings living in New York City in surprisingly large apartments, navigating their relationships as well as life in the Big Apple. Initially derided as derivative of “Seinfeld,” the show soon found a style to call its own, helped by the cast’s phenomenal chemistry. The show’s finale was one of the most-watched in network television history, and the film received a Best Comedy Emmy in 2002, as well as an incredible 62 Emmy nominations during the course of its decade-long run.
