The scariest show on television is back for another season on FX as “American Horror Story: Freak Show” premieres Wednesday, October 8 at 10:00 p.m. “Get Prepared to Be Shocked” is the theme for season 4 of the critically acclaimed series which garnered 4 Emmy Awards, including wins for its stars, Jessica Lange and Kathy Bates.
In “Freak Show,” the story takes place in 1952 in Jupiter Florida. A sideshow troupe has arrived into town and the oddities of its members is straight out of Ripley’s Believe It or Not. Their dark energy has a very bad effect on the citizens of the sleepy town and as they the troupe members have experiences that they will never forget. Something disturbing happens in the town which may help the struggling travel show survive.
Many of the shows actors are returning for this next go round, as they have in previous seasons as different characters. Cast members, Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates, Evan Peters, Gadbourey Sidibe, Emma Roberts, Frances Conroy, Sarah Paulson, Angela Bassett, and Denis O’Hare return this season. Michael Chiklis joins the cast this season in a new role. Also returning to the series is actress Naomi Grossman. She is the only actor to return to the series ever as the same character. She previously appeared on “American Horror Story: Asylum.”
Classic TV Examiner caught up with Grossman on the Red Carpet of the show’s star-studded premiere as the cast and crew celebrated the start of their fourth season.
Check out the interview below:
Phyllis: How did you feel when you heard Pepper was coming back?
Naomi Grossmann: It’s pretty flattering they could have brought in any of these amazing characters we’ve seen back and they picked me. It sort of makes sense. Pepper belongs in a freak show, more than the Asylum maybe.
Phyllis: How is your character different than she was on the other series? Tell me all little about the two different Peppers.
Naomi Grossman: It’s a prequel, set ten years back so Pepper grows, literally.
Phyllis: How much information did you have before you started shooting? Was it just the scripts or did you have a background story to pull from?
Naomi Grossman: Not much, just the script and you draw, channel your energy from there.
Phyllis: What can audiences expect from the show this season?
Naomi Grossman: Audiences will be scared out of their minds on weekly basis. I think it’s going to be beautiful, frightening and important. I really think that this show, unlike some of the other seasons which I love, this one is going to raise certain questions that people don’t want to think about because they’re difficult and they’re important. So I think that’s cool when you can mess with people in so many different ways. Scare them, make them feel uncomfortable, make them scared . If you can do that, it’s awesome.
Phyllis: I like this style [of dress]. What are you wearing?
Naomi Grossman: I’m wearing a Natalia Bender gown. She’s an up and coming couture designer. It was originally made for Shakira, who apparently is also short and whose hips also don’t lie. Although she informed me that my butt’s bigger.
Phyllis: Well there’s nothing wrong with a big butt these days.
