Amy Grant made a very impressive debut at Sanford Center in Bemidji Minnesota on Wednesday night. With the show nearly selling out, people came from all over to see the charismatic Contemporary Christian music star. Grant was on tour for this particular date with Mark Shultz and special guest Saphire Brown.
Grant held an exclusive VIP reception prior to the show in the ballroom with a limited number of guests in which attendees were given the opportunity to ask her pretty much anything. Grant very patiently and with very well thought out answers, went through each question very gracefully and absolutely sparkled in the room. Her countenance and joy just makes you feel good and Grant does it so effortlessly.
It was right around 7 P.M. when Grant suddenly stopped what she was doing and looked straight toward the doors of the room and asked “Is that Saphire on stage right now? I want to go see her.” And with that Grant and her tour manager walked out of the room and headed toward the arena.
Saphire was indeed on the stage alone with her acoustic guitar performing her upcoming single “Courage” and her voice and stage presence was incredible. It was easy to see that Saphire would be able to get Amy Grant to cut her VIP reception short, the girl has some pipes and if this performance has anything to say about it, this is surely the beginning of greatness, and Grant has been in the industry long enough to know when someone has unbelievable talent.
Saphire would perform two more songs one being an original “Your Amazing Grace” and “He Knows My Name” by Francesca Battistelli.
There would be no short intermission after Saphire, as Mark Schultz would take the stage next. Shultz who got his start being a youth pastor and music leader has a very powerful voice and sings with such conviction that even the hardest heart would be softened. Shultz would perform hits like ” I am”, “Letters From War.” and “All Things Possible.” What was strangely missing from the set was “He’s My Son.” which is Schultz’s signature hit.
There would a short 10 minute break and Amy Grant would come out to wrap up the evening. Grant would offer accolades to Saphire saying that she was wonderful. Grant had a spectacular set of music, with new arrangements and acoustic versions on hits like, “Takes a Little Time,” “Saved By Love”, an amazing duet with her guitar player picking up hubby Vince Gill’s part on “House of Love,” “El Shaddai,” and her pop anthem written for her daughter “Baby, Baby.” Grant’s voice never sounded better, and she had some great stories on the creations of some of her biggest hits and more.
Overall the night of music was the perfect mix, with openers, Saphire and Shultz. Amy Grant brought down the house and more. The highlight of the night for many and Grant herself was indeed newcomer Saphire. The little girl with a big voice, Grant herself said that she is one of very few singers that doesn’t have to sing at full power to sound incredible. Bemidji Minnesota has been harboring a secret all these years, tonight she made her official debut, her name is Saphire.
