Mugshots usually aren’t a good thing to have going viral on the internet, but Angela Coates just might have gotten a bit of an unintended career boost out of being disorderly in Atlanta. UPI reported Sept. 26 that the Florida model lit up social media the past few days, garnering favorable descriptors like “sexy” and “hot” as her mugshot photo became the talk of the web.
According to UPI, the 22-year-old is having a viral run due to a disorderly conduct arrest in Atlanta last month. Not only that, but Angela Coates had no worries about bail money. She was covered by an army of admirers willing to pay the $360 to get her out of jail.
But Coates, who is a former JET magazine “Beauty of the Week,” says she never needed the bail money. She was only held in a holding cell for 13 hours. It is all a misunderstanding, she insists, claiming she was wrongfully arrested.
She told Inside Edition that at first her mugshot getting so much traction on the web made her anxious because, “…honestly, the look I’m trying to go for is definitely not involving any type of crime, mugshot, or anything or anything to do with that. So I was a little disappointed and upset.”
Taking a “what can you do?” approach, she said she decided to remain “positive.” She even referred to herself as the female Jeremy Meeks (the guy whose mugshot went viral back in mid-June because of his perceived attractiveness).
“I actually didn’t even go into jail-jail,” she said later in the video interview. “I didn’t even get into one of the orange jumpsuits. I was in holding for about 13 hours. It was kind of funny, but at the end of the day it’s still very serious to me, because I take my career very serious and my life very serious. It was the worst experience, it really was.”
Angela Coates is just the latest arrestee to have their mugshot go viral on the internet due to being attractive (usually referred to as “hot” or “sexy”) to a great number of people. As noted previously, in June a convicted felon named Jeremy Meeks saw his mugshot go viral after being photoed by California cops following an arrest for felony weapons possession. According to Know Your Meme, back in 2010, Meagan Simmons, a mother of four, was arrested for DUI in Florida. Her image eventually became an internet meme, the “attractive convict.”
As for Angela Coates’ mugshot helping her career, it got her national exposure and an interview with Inside Edition. Already a glamour model, the increased exposure cannot but help land her bigger and better gigs. Now, she just has to avoid having to take more mugshots.
