The phone rang at my San Diego home today and the caller ID said “DAVEBOSSIENCFFP” 516-656-4133. I thought “I don’t know a Dave Bossien, but a CFFP is a Certified Financial Planner – perhaps it’s work related, or it’s important, maybe I should answer it.” I work in the world of insurance and also do retirement planning, but this was a call to my home phone, so rather than sound too professional I answered with a simple “Hello.”
There was silence, then a person who sounded like an older black lady asked for Ms Renee (ruh-nay) Girard to which I replied “It’s Réne (ray-nee) and I’m a Mister, speaking.” She said “Oh I’m sorry …” while attempting to finish eating or chewing whatever she had in her mouth. I’m thinking to myself “Oh great another telemarketer who obviously wasn’t expecting anyone to pick up the phone so quickly – she’s over here eating while trying to keep to her script.”
She said she had an important message from Mike Huckabee, which I then thought that “Dave Bossien CFFP” was a trick to keep people from knowing it’s a call from Mike Huckabee because we had been getting some of those calls and ignoring them because c’mon – Mike Huckabee’s not going to call me – even though I wish he would so I could get on his TV show – which I thought I might get that chance this last holiday season when someone I know was going on his show and I thought he might drop the name InsureMyParts.com … but that’s another story in the process of trying to save the world from Obamacare.
Nevertheless, I do like Mike Huckabee from what I know about him and thought I might as well go ahead and listen to the pre-recorded message they would most likely play for me – so I could get it out of the way and know what this was all about.
It turns out that it was indeed a pre-recorded message from Mike telling me about a threat to the National Day of Prayer from some group that wants to eliminate the National Day of Prayer as well as change the Pledge of Allegience. In general, these fanatics (my word not his) are tying to keep us from praying so Mike is rallying Christians like himself who believe they should be stopped. This led my mind back in time to Morgan Cryar’s hit song “Pray in the USA” – particularly the lyrics that state: “Until they steal your heart away, you can still pray in the USA.”
However, I do believe he’s right – we as Christians should take action to uphold our God-given and legal rights to express ourselves openly in prayer, exercising our freedom of religion, rather than allow selfish atheist sinners to pass new laws and change current laws that oppose our Christian rights. I’m quite certain that’s how our nation’s founding fathers would want it and I’m certain that Godly children and grandchildren in the future will have wanted us to take a stand when we had the chance. I was also holding a VISA gift card in my hand and thought I could probably donate the balance because that would be a better use of my funds than buying some new darts for my dartboard on amazon.com.
When the recording finished a new lady comes onto the phone line to ask me if I listened to the message from Mike Huckabee. “Yes.” “Well then do you agree that we need prayer more than ever in this country?” To which I replied: “No.”
Rather than question my response or ask me any further questions she kind of bumbled into what was most likely more of their scripted lines in order to get off the phone and move on to someone else. What a shame! Here I was ready to give, wanting to give, with gift card in hand, and because they asked a poorly thought out theological question, which I answered honestly, whoever created the script and/or told them to stick to it also caused them to lose an easy donation.
Yes I could have quickly tried to keep this second lady on the phone line, but I just kinda laughed it off and let her go while I was doing more thinking than speaking – which is how people like me operate – and that’s a good thing, otherwise these callers wouldn’t get so many of us on the phone.
Mike, if you ever happen to have this article forwarded to you, please know that you may want or need to go about this differently in the future. Much prayer is always necessary. There is no time in history when prayer is more important. God is and will always be on the throne of each of our lives as our sovereign Lord and King, overseeing everything, allowing evil men to plot and plan and manipulate others because sin has infested the hearts of those who openly and silently oppose Him. There has always been slavery and persecution, starvation and corruption, false gods and false religions, spiritual battles in the heavenly realms, jealousy, anxiousness, sorrows, pride, greediness, gluttony, ruthlessness, arrogance, vanity, drunkenness, laziness and a chasing after the wind.
Perhaps now, as much as ever, we need men and women to spend time in God’s word, searching the scripture, meditating on it day and night, submitting themselves to God the Father because of the blood shed by Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of our sins, so that we will know what prayers to make and what actions to take as His ambassadors in this lost and dying world that needs pure love with the indwelling of the Holy Spirit to lead us and guide us in all truth and understanding to worship our Creator who made us to be conformed into His image before it’s too late, because this life is like a vapor just waiting to pass, and in the mean time, we are here to do His bidding because everything else is wood, hay, and stubble – including my gift card which I will still put to good use as the Lord has seen fit to entrust it to me for such a time as this.
Rise up men and women of the Lord, and never, ever, ever quit.
