Art has been an integral part of the visitor experience at Robert Mondavi Winery in the Napa Valley for over 45 years. Gracious living and art are in evidence in this living museum showcasing the contribution of painters, sculptors, photographers, musicians, and international chefs.
So it wasn’t a surprise when they previewed the 2010 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon from the To Kalon Vineyard alongside the current vintage at the Workshop Residence in San Francisco’s Dog Patch neighborhood. This artist’s residence/gallery/store encouraged the mingling of wine with art. Artist Paolo Salvagione spoke about the inspiration for his beautiful creations while guests sipped Fume Blanc that Robert Mondavi is credited with introducing to the public.
Winemaker Nova Cadamatre shared her love of making great wine and highlighted the personality of the grapes showcased in the each of the wines we sampled which will be components in the final Cabernet Sauvignon. Lush dark fruit with balanced tannins and oak personified the perfect glass of wine. We compared the current vintage (2013) with the more mature 2010 and began to imagine how it might evolve when it is finally released.
At the winery in Napa Valley the intersection of food, wine and art combine to create a welcoming environment for enjoying the good things in life. The winery’s permanent art collection includes the bronze and marble sculptures of the late San Francisco artist Beniamino Bufano, as well as paintings by Napa Valley artists while the rotating exhibits feature a variety of artists.
Culinary programs have included food pairings, cooking classes and food symposiums. Fresh, local ingredients have been used long before the farm-to-table movement. Notable Chef’s have been featured during the bi-annual Great Chefs at Robert Mondavi Winery series including Paul Bocuse, Jean Troisgros, Jacques Pepin, Julia Child and Alice Waters.
Their summer concert series celebrated their 45th year playing host to countless music legends such as Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennett, the Buena Vista Social Club, Robert Cray, India Arie and Aimee Mann. Spending the evening under the stars, surrounded by vineyards and listening to incredible music accompanied by wine, never gets old.
Robert Mondavi Winery was one of the first to establish extensive tours and tastings to educate the American public about wine.
