The history of the ultraviolent fighting game series Mortal Kombat is one littered with more blood and gore than any long-standing franchise. After the success of a joint effort with DC Comics to make the game Injustice: Gods Among Us, NetherRealm Studios have gone back to their roots to bring forth Mortal Kombat X, the tenth title of the polarizing series. With the hype generated again following the reveal of MKX during this past E3, it’s as good a time as any to appreciate another one of Mortal Kombat’s lethal ladies. In particular, the one who’s been with the games since the very beginning. With military strength and good looks, she is a literal definition to the term “drop-dead gorgeous.” Harkening from the Earthrealm, she is Sonya Blade.
Over two decades ago when Mortal Kombat first entered the gaming scene, Sonya appears as a member of a U.S. Special Forces unit, a position she’s maintained in every appearance she’s ever made. While she may be human and skilled with a kenpo/tae kwon do fighting style, her abilities surpass those which normal humans don’t possess. Among them are being able to blow a kiss that sets opponents on fire, manipulation of energy, and even a temporary midair flight. It’s all those strengths and more that earn her the honor as the only female Earthrealm fighter to join the elder god Raiden’s chosen group of warriors. So even from the start, Sonya was something special and not to be underestimated against any other fighter.
Sonya has two different story paths, depending on which MK game is played. The longest one that originates to MK1 tells of her venture against the mercenary Kano, someone she had been chasing for quite some time. Unfortunately after her unit is killed by Shang Tsung, she is captured as a prisoner for Shao Khan and rendered unable to fight during the events of MK2. Her longtime friend and partner Jax manages to free her however, and she ultimately kills Kano at the conclusion of MK3. It’s at this point where she earns the trust of Raiden and is inducted into his group of summoned fighters whenever trouble arises. However, she is sadly killed by the end of Mortal Kombat: Armageddon by an unknown assailant.
But all is not lost once Mortal Kombat was rebooted in 2011 with a new, alternative storyline outside of everything that happened by Armageddon’s end. Her story here is almost similar to the original, except now she is fighting to save the life of Jax. Furthermore, she is reluctantly partnered with the pompous movie star Johnny Cage, who makes it a point to flirt with her to little success. Surprisingly enough though, Cage is able to overpower her in battle and after saving her life from Kano, agrees to work with him to stop Shang Tsung and Shao Khan. Eventually, when confronted by Khan and his forces, nearly all the Earthrealm warriors including Jax are killed by the evil queen Sindel.
After Raiden ultimately defeats Khan, Sonya and Cage are the only humans left alive. This leads Sonya to leave the Marines suffering the grief of her losses, although the spirit of her missing father is enough to motivate her back to continue fighting any and all of Khan’s forces wherever they may be. This shows that even for all her strength, Sonya had as much human weaknesses as any other. But any true fighter knows how to get back on their feet after being knocked down, which is what Sonya demonstrates to a great degree here.
All things considered, Sonya Blade is both highly praised and feared among the roster of Kombatants after all these years. She was even considered strong enough to be a member of the Green Lantern Corps in the Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe crossover game. Although it may appear her time as a fighter is done since the upcoming Mortal Kombat X takes place 25 years after the end of the 2011 reboot. But her and Johnny Cage’s daughter Cassie will be around to continue Sonya’s legacy, so all is not lost. In any event, whether dead or alive, Sonya Blade remains to be the video game babe that gave Mortal Kombat a cutting edge it always needed.
