Surf City USA now has its first handcrafted brewery thanks to Glenn Closson. Glenn loves craft beer and has been a home-brewer for many years. He made it not only for himself but to share with family and friends. But only being able to brew 5 gallons at a time pretty much capped his production. He found out very quickly that going from a 5-gallon brew to a production size vat isn’t that easy and hired Derek Testerman from Lancaster, PA (with 2 and a half years at Iron Hill Brewery under his belt). We had the pleasure of meeting Glenn and Derek one week before their brewery opened to the public back in April 2014. Derek was just finishing up the mash process and was transferring to the kettle. The aroma in the building was heavenly. It smelled like breakfast – oatmeal, coffee, and a little chocolaty. It was especially noticeable when the vat was open and the steam escaped. We got to try a little bit of this “Sweet Crude” as it was transferred. It tasted sweet like molasses with hints of oatmeal, coffee, and chocolate. As it goes further along in the fermentation process, the flavors will change, but it was neat to taste it at this stage.
We paid a visit recently to check out the new tasting room and try Taco Brewsday. Here’s a peek at the flight samples (choice of 4 per flight):
Beach Cruiser is their first seasonal release and a take on a traditional Berliner Weisse. This is referred to as “German Lemonade” as it is a go-to for first time beer drinkers and non-beer drinkers. It is composed of pilsner malt, pale wheat, aridulated malt, and Williamette hops. In the tasting room, raspberry, peach, and traditional woodruff syrups can be added as well. Tasting notes: Tastes like cider; light, crisp, clean, tart; definitely a snacking beer. Food pairings: fruit, sandwiches, salad, fish. Rating: 4/5 stars
Overcast Summer Wheat is their unfiltered American Wheat Ale. It is composed of American 2-Row, American white wheat, C-30 with Williamette, Hallertau, and Falconer’s Flight hops. Tasting notes: Looks like a Heffenweiser; strong flavor, very bitter, and leaves a bitter after taste; hoppy; medium-bodied. Food pairings: burger, steak, carnitas. Rating: 2.5/5 stars
PCH Pale Ale is an All-American Malt and Hop ale. It is composed of American 2-Row malted barley, American white wheat, and American caramel malt with Magnum, Cascade, Centennial, and Crystal hops. Tasting notes: Full-bodied; slightly bitter, hoppy, with mild hoppy after taste; slight medicinal flavor; subtle citrus flavor. Food pairings: burger, steak. Rating: 3/5 stars
Long Live the Queen is a “Braggot IPA”. It is composed of Marris Otter malt, American 2-Row, Wheat malt, Melanoidin, honey malt, flaked barley with Magnum and Waimea hops. Tasting notes: smooth, English pub beer; light to medium-bodied and well balanced; flavors linger on the back of the palate. Food pairings: steak, shepherd’s pie, fish and chips. Rating: 4.5/5 stars
Hang Ten DIPA is composed of American 2-Row and Patagonia C-35 with Magnum, Chinook, Centennial, Crystal, Columbus, Comet, Waimea, Cascade, and Dr. Rudi hops. Tasting notes: The flavor starts out slow and builds; medicinal flavor on end of the palate with hoppy finish; smooth; full-bodied. Food pairings: beef and lamb. Rating: 3/5 stars
Hang Five IPA is an introductory India Pale Ale. It is composed of American 2-Row and Carapils with Magnum, Centennial, Falconer’s Flight, and HBC342 hops. Tasting notes: It’s half the strength of the Hang Ten; smoother that Hang Ten; well-balanced. Food pairing: beef and lamb. Rating: 4/5 stars
Crimson Typhoon is our favorite! Tasting notes: not too strong; slightly bitter; easy to drink; light and refreshing. Food pairing: Chicken and pork. Rating: 5/5 stars
Sweet Crude Stout is a scaled down Imperial recipe of their American Stout. It is composed of Head Brewer Derek’s proprietary blend of top quality malts and hops. Tasting notes: chocolate and coffee aroma; coffee flavor with bitter bite; grapefruit at the end of the palate. Food pairing: steak and maybe a stout float. Rating: 3.5/5 stars
