Earth Tu Face is an internationally known, plant-based skin care line located in the heart of San Francisco, California. Recently, I had the opportunity to speak with Sarah and Marina, the founders of Earth Tu Face about the brand and here is what they had to say…
(Q) Tell me a little more about the Earth Tu Face brand…
The business officially started in 2010. It wasn’t something Marina or I planned to do (to have a business). We made products for our own use and were both working in health care as herbalists. People we knew started using the products and word spread to a few little boutiques in our area. The community became interested, which showed us there was an obvious need for the line. We stepped back and looked at the situation and decided if we were really going to start selling to stores, making the products available to many, we would have to take a risk, figure out how to create products we stand behind on a larger scale and dive into Earth Tu Face. We wanted to deliver natural products that create glowing results & are safe for everyone from children on (we intentionally chose ingredients with low allergy risks).
(Q) I love the idea that your products are 100% plant based. I have to ask, what is your stance on animal testing?
We are pro people testing and testing on ourselves – we are against animal testing and do not test on animals. Why not just people test? After all we are the ones using the products. If someone is confident a product they are making is good for the skin and body (not harmful) I believe people testing is the reasonable way to experiment with a product but again, we always made products with low allergy risks and high health benefits.
(Q) You have products for the face, the eyes, and the body, as you have all-purpose products and limited edition products. What are your best selling products?
Our best selling products are our: Skin Stick, Face Wash, Face Balm and then Repair Serum or Rosemary Salt Lotion (hard to say on that one, I think it is a tie).
(Q) I love the idea of the ‘Skin Stick’ as it’s a skin salve for the face, lips, and body. Tell me more about this product…
Every herbalist has a healing salve in their apothecary. This is our favorite version between Marina and I’s creations. It is our go-to product for moisture, our take-everywhere product for lip balm, irritated patches, scars and parched skin. We think it is because of it’s versatility that it is so popular. Also, it is in a 100% biodegradable package so it doesn’t contribute plastic waste to our landfills or oceans.
(Q) Tell me a little more about your recycling concept…
Eventually we hope to be able to refill our glass containers so that people don’t have to repeatedly buy new ones. Until that time all of our glass is recyclable as are our labels. Or, we hope, our customers reuse the bottles at home. Our Skin Stick is compostable so it leaves no trace when you are done using it.
(Q) What are your thoughts about genetically modified organisms (GMOs)?
We do not use genetically modified organisms as we believe them to be harmful to the planet. Marina and I both have experience with gardens and growing our own food. There are many reasons we are against GMO – too many to list but here are a few: Many studies have shown GMO crops are killing insects we need (pollinators like butterflies and honey bees). Another problem is that Mono cropping is common with GMO seeds. This is harmful to the land. It creates damaging ecological effects such as fierce pest invasions that then cause companies to use toxic pesticides to deal with the problem.
When you buy whole foods from a farmer, you support a farmer. When you buy processed foods, you’re almost always supporting a large corporation that likely harms the earth with their agricultural practices. GMO organisms are really new to our planet and we have no idea what the long term consequences will be. Here is one of my favorite quotes by Wendell Berry: “Whether we and our politicians know it or not, nature is party to all our deals and decisions…She has more votes, a longer memory, and a sterner sense of justice than we do.” Our lives are short and we believe we should make a positive impact on nature while we are here.
(Q) For those people tuning in to this interview, what would you like them to know about Earth Tu Face?
We always get asked about where the name came from. Earth Tu Face is a play on words with several layers of meaning. It relates to our inspiration from the organic farm grown food movement (farm to table). The plants & ingredients come from the Earth (not a chemical laboratory) to your face and body. Also, ultimately, we all have the planet (Earth) to face – we have to face our decisions and our impact on our planet & ourselves. For that reason we sustainable source all of our ingredients and leave out those that are harming the planet right now such as Palm oil and its derivatives.
