Clark’s Botanicals is a natural skin care brand located in the heart of Bronxville, New York. Recently, I had the opportunity to talk to the man behind the brand, Francesco Clark. Here is what he had to say…
(Q) Tell me a little more about Clark’s Botanicals…
The entire skincare line’s objective is rebalancing the skin, that’s why all Clark’s Botanicals products feature Jasmine Absolute, a precious essential oil that naturally rebalances skin. Derived from nocturnally-blooming flowers, this extract is also antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and immuno-stimulating. It works to calm and heal a broad spectrum of skin types, from young to mature, oily to dry, and normal to sensitive.
(Q) Behind every great innovator lies a source of inspiration. I have to ask, what inspired you to create Clark’s Botanicals?
I never sought out to start a skincare line, per se. After having sustained my spinal cord injury in 2002, I needed some time to regroup. After three years, I decided I wanted to be more of an advocate for other people with disabilities, and suddenly the way that I looked mattered to me. With my spinal cord injury, I lost the ability not only to walk, but to sweat. This led to clogged pores and chronic breakouts. It wasn’t so much a question of vanity, as it was a source of strength, to want to look the way that I feel, which is energetic and happy and healthy. Nothing on the market worked with my skin, because I was sensitive to all of the chemical ingredients, and impure naturals that a lot of other lines use, so I turned to my father, who is a medical doctor and also homeopathic doctor, and we started to look into botanical extracts and essential oils. As a result, Clark’s Botanicals was born.
(Q) What are your most popular products? Tell me a little more about your best sellers…
Some of our best sellers include the Smoothing Marine Cream and Anti-Puff Eye Cream. The Smoothing Marine Cream is perfect for dry, stressed skin as it balances the skin with Jasmine absolute. We coupled the Jasmine Absolute with high concentrations of algae extract and sugar derived glycolic acid, so your skin will glow from the inside out. It’ll tingle when you put it on, and after about two weeks of using it sparingly district to see a real difference. The Anti-Puff Eye Cream smoothes and softens skin, while lightening the look of dark circles with Vitamin K, and targeting wrinkles with vitamins A, C, E, and a powerful peptide called hexapeptide 11.
(Q) What products would you recommend for someone with combination skin?
The Intense Radiance Mask is perfect for combination skin, it helps revitalize tired skin making it look and feel like you just had a facial. It uses White Genepi extract, which is an Ecocert ingredient, and it helps to reverse and repair extracellular damage in the top layer of your dermis. I love using active botanical ingredients that actually make a visible change in your skin!
(Q) Tell me a little more about Uttwiler Spätlauber Swiss apple and how it is used in Clark’s Botanicals products…
The Uttwiler Spatlauber Swiss apple so interesting to me, because this Apple has unique properties that are constantly repairing and regenerating itself. If the bark of the Spatlauber tree was damaged, the bark cells would convert to Stem Cells, and repair the damaged bark. After scientists discovered this, they started to investigate and see if the Uttwiler cells could be used on human skin, and if there were any benefits. What they found is the Uttwiler Spatlauber cells actually keep your skin’s stem cells from becoming senescent, or dying. this helps combat environmental stresses, UVA and UVB stresses, and helps your skin stay healthy and supple. It’s amazing to see how well this ingredient works to revitalize tired looking and aging skin.
(Q) What products would you recommend for someone with acne scars?
For acne scars, I would recommend the skin clearing face and body wash, because it helps to exfoliate and soften skin in a gentle way. The salicylic acid coupled with algae, helps to sloth away dead skin cells, while not being overly drying. Then, I would recommend the smoothing marine cream, as the glycolic acid in this moisturizer will aggressively target the scars, and help to soften the look of them. The intense radiance mask should be used as a spot treatment on the acne scar two or three times a week, for about 45 minutes. Some people will leave it on while they sleep on a small particular area, as this helps to even out discolorations and make the skin more evenly toned.
(Q) Is it true that you serve as the national ambassador for the Christopher Reeve foundation? Tell me more about your work with this amazing foundation…
I absolutely love working with the Christopher Reeve foundation! They are aggressively pursuing a cure for spinal cord injuries, while providing for the care for people with injuries, which often goes forgotten. Christopher Reeve has always been one of my biggest heroes, and his drive and determined spirit resonates within me to push that little bit harder than I normally would. There so much that we do, and the foundation has this intricate network, connected to the best researchers around the world. As of recently, they are involved with a new type of electrical stimulation that is implanted in the spine, which is allowing for people who have been in wheelchairs for years, to start moving their legs. It is just incredible to see how far science has come these past ten years, when I was told that nothing could be done, to today, where I might just kick you if you tell me that!
(Q) For those beauty enthusiasts reading this interview today, what would you like them to know?
It can be difficult to look at beauty, in magazines and television, and not think of fad products. Makeup colors can change with seasons, but when you find a skincare product that really works for you, don’t change it!
