Recently, I had the opportunity to talk to Judy Carlo, the managing director of both Mustela USA and Mustela Canada. Here is what she had to say…
(Q) Hello. How are you? Tell me a little more about the Mustela brand…
Thank you for providing Mustela with this wonderful interview opportunity. My name is Judy Carlo and I am the managing director of the Mustela brand in the United States and Canada. Mustela is a brand of Expanscience Laboratories – a 100% family-owned pharmaceuticals and cosmetics laboratory with an expertise in skincare, particularly for babies and pregnant women. We have been providing expert skincare for babies and mothers-to-be since 1950 and offer a complete range of specially formulated skincare to best address the changes in the delicate skin of newborns, babies, children, mothers-to-be and new mothers. Currently, Mustela is the leading baby skincare and stretch marks brand in Europe.
(Q) When it comes to innovating and creating a company like this, there is always some sort of inspiration that follows. What is the story behind Mustela?
The Mustela parent company, Expanscience Laboratories, was created in France in 1950 when Paul Berthomé, father of the current chairman, partnered with a pharmacist. After speaking with mothers and researching the baby market, they realized that there was no alternative to soap for baby skincare—and because soap can be harsh on the delicate skin of babies, they decided to develop a “2-in-1” soap-free product that could both cleanse and moisturize. It was actually the first cleansing lotion specifically designed for babies in Europe! Today, Paul’s son, Jean-Paul Berthomé, serves as CEO of Expanscience.
(Q) I think it is amazing that you have an array of products for expect and new mothers, as well as, babies and children. What are your best selling products right now?
Right now, some of our best-selling products are the Dermo-Cleansing Gel for Hair & Body, Hydra Bebé Body Lotion and Stelatopia Moisturizing Cream, which is formulated for eczema-prone skin. From the Mustela 9 Months line, our Stretch Marks Double Action is a huge hit among expectant mothers—we have studies that show that 96% of women who used it during their pregnancy did not develop stretch marks!
(Q) Your products do not contain parabens. I have to ask, what ingredients are excluded from Mustela’s formulations?
We are constantly striving to make our formulas both safe and effective, so our products are all tested under dermatologic and pediatric control and are free of parabens, phthalates, phenoxyethanol and alcohol. They are also tested to be hypoallergenic to minimize the risk of allergic reactions. Recently, we reformulated our Bebé product range, which now has a new standard of formulas with even more ingredients of natural origin.
(Q) What is Avocado Perseose and how does this particular ingredient play a huge role in your products?
Avocado Perseose is a new, patented ingredient that was discovered as a result of more than 10 years of research about baby’s skin during the earliest stages of life. Our research found that at birth, skin contains its highest reserve of stem cells, but until the cutaneous barrier is fully formed (around age two), these cells remain extremely vulnerable and are easily compromised due to daily stresses such as air pollution, temperature variations and UV exposure. Mustela researchers set out to find a solution to provide parents with a new generation of safe and effective formulas to protect skin at the earliest stages of life, and thus, Avocado Perseose was created. It is a peptide capable of both supporting the development of the barrier function and protecting cells from day-to-day stresses. At the end of last year, we reformulated the Mustela Bebé line to include Avocado Perseose. We are very excited to share that our new generation of clinically-tested skincare products act in perfect harmony with baby’s skin, combining targeted efficacy and maximum tolerance with an average of 92% ingredients of natural origin.
(Q) When it comes to products, you have an extensive selection of ‘Prenatal’ products, as you have ‘Postpartum’ products. What is the main difference between the two?
The Mustela 9 Months product range was created to offer safe and effective products to expectant and new moms. Our “Prenatal” products are designed to safely take care of you during your pregnancy, with products to prevent stretch marks, alleviate discomfort and increase hydration. Our “Postpartum” products are designed to help your skin after child birth, and include products to firm skin and reduce the size, depth and color of stretch marks.
(Q) You are all about giving back, which I truly admire. I also noticed you have your own foundation, as well. Tell me a little more about the Mustela Foundation…
The Mustela Foundation was created with the support of the Foundation de France and is committed to supporting healthcare professionals involved in infant care. The Foundation supports research initiatives in pediatrics, provides infant healthcare professionals with pediatric and obstretrics prevention packs and supports other organizations in this field.
(Q) For those people reading this interview, what would you like them to know about Mustela?
