On last night’s Cooking Channel episode of “Best in Chow” Canadian host Cris Nannarone went to Calgary, Alberta, Canada for the Calgary Stampede. Cris took his fun personality and love for people to search for the best carnival food at what has been called the greatest outdoor show on earth; the Calgary Stampede.
The Calgary Stampede is an annual ten-day rodeo, exhibition, and celebration of the most insane carnival foods. So today, Cris is in search of the best carnival food and judges who will vote for the “Best in Chow.”
The Calgary Stampede has everything one would want from a carnival; rides, games, rodeo and the wildest deep-fried food on earth.
Cris, donned in his cowboy gear, roamed the massive area where strange and unusual foods were being sold, along with recognizable things like turkey legs that looked like they came from a pterodactyl. He stopped at the Naaco Truck that blends Mexican and Indian food into something amazing. He met with Aman Adatia, the chef and owner of the Naaco Truck, a born and raised Calgarian, a classically trained chef, who studied in Paris and graduated from the University of Calgary. His mother came up with the idea for the Papri Tot, a tater tot delight. Although afraid of jalapenos, contained in the blend; Cris put on a brave face and actually loved them. They contain; deep-fried potato tots with chaat masala spice blend, truck-made pineapple Pico de Gallo, sweet yogurt chutney, date tamarind chutney, queso fresco, and potato crunchies.
Several people sent Cris to the Avatara Pizza Truck where he met with chef and co-owner Ryan Wright, a pizza Jedi. Cris helped make the Crusty Cowboy Pizza and loved every bite. The pizza contained; gluten-free multi-grain flatbread, Poblano chili lime BBQ sauce, mozzarella cheese, cheddar cheese, smoky beef bacon, grilled chicken breast, white button mushrooms, crushed pineapple, banana peppers bruschetta, fresh basil, honey drizzle and crushed cashews.
Cris then went to find Joey’s Urban, a double-decker red bus and met Chef Aaron Gillingham. Joey’s happens to be the largest seafood chain in Canada. Cris even met with Joey, who many believe is not a real person! He tried three items, the deep-fried sushi, Vicious Fish on a Stick and the Vicious Fish Taco. They entered the Vicious Fish Taco in the competition that contained; a flour tortilla, chipotle cream sauce, Tex-Mex cheese blend, Joey’s hand-battered famous Vicious Fish, fresh-cut cabbage, hand-cut Pico de Gallo, more chipotle cream sauce and fresh lime.
Cris gathered his nine jurors, who will taste each of the three carnival foods and vote for the best. The choice is going to be a tough one, so Cris took them to all three trucks to sit in an open environment where they were sequestered to do the judging. Once they filled up on all the entries, Cris, the jurors and the chefs waited for the results. The winner of the Carnival Food War at the Calgary Stampede was Chef Ryan Wright at Avatara Pizza for the Crusty Cowboy Pizza on this episode of “Best in Chow.”
