Anaheim has a hidden magic shop that is easy to miss. It is called Best Magic and Costume and resides on the corner of S. Magnolia Ave. and Orange Ave. The area is notable for its residential housing, a school, and a church. It seems an odd place to have a magic/costume shop. But it is there, and it contains high quality merchandise for magicians, other performers, and people hosting or attending special events. The store also contains a number of gift and gag items.
Gordon, an employee at the shop, speaks of the lack of magic shops in the local area. He considers it a shame more people don’t know Best Magic and Costume exists, because there is no other store like it in Anaheim. Customers enter the store claiming to have previously driven all the way to Los Angeles, searching for products they didn’t realize were available locally at Best Magic and Costume.
Ben Nye, a high quality makeup often used by performers, is one of the products people drive far and wide to find before realizing it is available nearby at Best Magic and Costume. Local students attending college use the store to purchase makeup—once they realize it’s there. These students are often theater majors or future beauticians. The store sells a lot of Ben Nye makeup to people, especially students, who would rather not drive to Los Angeles.
The magic part of the shop features magic tricks, books, and videos about magic. Gordon has bought some of these items and can do some amateur magic tricks. Other amateur magicians enter the store to buy products, and some professional magicians also purchase items from the store.
The costume portion of the shop attracts all kinds of customers. Besides the obvious demographic (performers), there are other groups of people who purchase costumes. People attending the Renaissance Faire, hosting a Roaring ‘20s party, or having a pirate themed wedding can be found shopping at the store.
There is also the gift shop aspect. Around Christmas time, the store sells magic kits that people can buy as gifts. There are also a number of practical joke items. Gordon likens it to “Spencer’s type stuff.” For those who do not know, Spencer’s is famous for its raunchy gags and “Over the Hill” themed gifts. But Gordon mentions some gifts at Best Magic and Costume that could come from a Harry Potter movie. They have candy that turns your mouth blue, and a special whistle called an “exhaust whistle” that can trick a person into thinking there is something wrong with his or her car.
Best Magic and Costume, though a little known store, features a wide variety of merchandise that would appeal to people from all walks of life. More information can be obtained at the store’s Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace profiles. They are located at 625 South Magnolia Avenue 92804.
