The following is a list of the biggest upsets that occurred in college football in Week 5 of the 2014 college football season which ended on Saturday, September, 27, 2014. There were a ton of big upsets this week from a point spread view, as seven teams got upset yesterday who were favored by at least 10 points.
Only one upset occurred of a top 25 ranked team, as Florida State, Texas A&M, and Stanford all rallied to win in the fourth quarter or OT, and Georgia hung on yesterday to avoid being upset. All three military schools were involved in upsets yesterday, with two going down to defeat as favorites, and one winning as a decided underdog.
All in all, a pretty exciting Week 5 in college football.
Biggest upsets in college football in Week 5 of 2014 season
- Missouri upset #13 South Carolina on the road as a 5.5 point underdog
Missouri upset #13 South Carolina on the road, 21-20, by scoring two late TDs after trailing 20-7, as a 5.5 point underdog. A big comeback win for Missouri after last week’s stunning loss to Indiana. The win sure made the Missouri cheerleaders happy.
- Akron upset Pitt on the road as a 20 point underdog
In the biggest point spread upset of the week, Akron went on the road to Pittsburgh and upset Pitt, 21-10, as a 20 point underdog. This is the second week in a row Pitt was upset as a heavy favorite, as Iowa beat the Panthers last week.
- Florida International upset UAB on the road as a 17 point underdog
Florida International took advantage of six UAB turnovers to upset the Blazers on the road, 34-20, as a 17 point underdog.
- Yale upset Army as a 14.5 point underdog
Yale’s 49-43 OT upset win over Army as a 14.5 point underdog was the first time an Ivy League school has beat an FBS opponent since 1986, and it was Yale’s first win over an FBS foe since 1982. This game was also the first time an IVY League school played an FBS school since 1996.
- Minnesota upset Michigan on the road as a 13.5 point underdog
Brady Hoke is almost certainly toast after Minnesota went into the Big House and upset Michigan, 30-14, as a 13.5 point underdog. Rumors are swirling about Jim Harbough and the Michigan job, as Harbough does not seem happy with the 49ers. You have to think that if Harbough really wants the job it’s going to be his given his proven track record.
- Washington State upset Utah on the road as a 13 point underdog
After trailing 24-7 at the half, Washington State outscored Utah 21-3 in the second half to pull off a big 28-27 upset on the road as a 13 point underdog. I am happy to say that I bet Washington State outright to win this game at big odds. I bet the Cougars because I know they can score and thought they could put up more points this week than Utah.
- Air Force upset Boise State as a 13 point underdog
Air Force took advantage of seven Boise State turnovers to upset the Broncos, 28-14, as a 13 point underdog.
- Northwestern upset Penn State on road in Happy Valley as 11.5 point underdog
Northwestern went on the road into Beaver Stadium and upset Penn State, 29-6, as a 11.5 point underdog. The loss was the first of the season for Penn State.
- Colorado State upset Boston College on the road as a 9.5 point underdog
Colorado State went to Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts and scored the last 10 points of the game to upset Boston College, 24-21, as a 9.5 point underdog. Colorado State now has two wins in 2014 over major conference teams (also beat Colorado). Boston College is just two weeks removed from their huge upset of USC.
- Western Kentucky upset Navy on the road as a 7 point underdog
Western Kentucky went into Annapolis as a seven point underdog and came away with a 36-27 win over Navy.
- Maryland upset Indiana on the road as a 4 point underdog
Maryland made its Big Ten debut a winning one as the Terrapins upset Indiana, 37-15, as a four point underdog on the road against its first Big Ten opponent. Indiana was coming off a huge upset win over Missouri last week and I thought they would let down this week and I bet Maryland outright to win this game.
