Beauty… it’s something that’s inescapable. We’re reminded it of it every time we turn on the TV, flip through a magazine or take a look at billboard. Everywhere you look, from print to women you pass walking down the street, we’re bombarded by “a desire to be desirable.” However, a lot of the cosmetics we use to alter our appearances (the liner to add a shadow of mystery, the red lipstick to get that alluring pout, and the mascara to give us fuller lashes), are often filled with harsh chemicals. And sadly, many of these chemicals are being linked to birth defects and other women’s health issues.
As an green beauty advocate, I’m always looking for natural alternatives. Sure, it would be easier to leave my house bare-faced, but there are occasions and certain social expectations that “require” enhancement. As I get older, I find myself wearing less and less makeup, and for the first time in years, I haven’t dyed or streaked my hair. The transition from being all dolled up to being au naturel hasn’t been a seamless transition, but the less is more approach has taught me that with age comes wisdom, and the ability to care less about what others think. There’s something incredibly liberating about being your own judge instead of worshiping the high-gloss images of Photoshopped models and actresses in magazines. It comes down to looking and feeling your best, and making smarter choices. We live in a world where we have many options at our fingertips, which makes it harder to choose, but also gives us the opportunity to find products that better fit our values and lifestyles.
Recently, I was in Sephora. I was looking at my lipstick collection, and noticed that I didn’t really have a shade for Fall. I walked in and starting browsing, when one of the makeup artists came over, and asked me if I needed help. Being that I am a licensed makeup artist, my initial reaction was “no thanks,” but I decided to be openminded, and welcomed the opportunity to pick her brain… and that’s how I was introduced to the BITE Beauty line.
BITE is all natural, and offers a stunning collection of shades. And, while I am prone to reach for ravishing and bold reds, I wanted a softer, day-to-day color that I could wear to the office, and a night out.I was heading to the MOMA and dinner that evening, and didn’t have a stitch of makeup on. Normally, this wouldn’t be a problem, but having worked a longer than usual week, my skin looked tired and the circles under my eyes were less than flattering. Marilyn, took me over to the BITE line, and reached for “Shiraz,” a gorgeous mauve that’s especially well-suited for women of golden or warm complexions. It was smooth, creamy, but didn’t feel pasty like some of the other natural lipsticks I had experimented with in the past.
BITE Beauty lip color delivers super antioxidant resveratrol, which fights free radicals with potent long-term anti-aging benefits. It’s parabens, sulfates and phthalates free, and is made exclusively with lip nurturing food-grade ingredients that are healthy enough to eat. So if you’re looking for berries, reds or nudes this Fall, you’ll love this natural cosmetics line based in Toronto.
