Organizers of the Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival have been busy. This spring the mockumentary State of Bacon made its debut, inaccurately chronicling Iowa’s rise to bacon supremacy. Tomorrow is the Second Annual Bacon Bowl, an arena football game between the Iowa Barnstormers and the Pittsburgh Power with a bacony theme, tailgate event, and an available ticket package that also includes a ticket to the 2015 Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival (only 1000 festival tickets available at Bacon Bowl 2014). That’s right, for $70 you could have tickets to the BaconFest 2015 before they go on sale, and not have to worry about tickets selling out in less than four hours for the eighth year in a row. For Bacon Bowl ticket package info, click here. However, that is not the big BaconFest news. The festival organizers have also orchestrated a move to a new venue for the 2015 festival, and they have planned a BLT event for next month. Here are the details.
The Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival got its start with 175 people jammed into El Bait Shop. Last year, the event brought 14,000 participants to the Iowa State Fairgrounds to devour 15,000 pounds of bacon. Next year’s Eighth Annual Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival will expand again, as an estimated 17,000 bacon fans will pack the Iowa Events Center on January 31. The event will spread over four levels of Hy-Vee Hall and the Community Choice Credit Union Convention Center. Festival organizers have already mentioned the possibility of future festivals using Wells Fargo Arena, as well.
Yesterday, BRBF organizers announced another offshoot event, B.L.T. B.L.T. is will combine three Iowa staples (BLT sandwiches, beer, and sweet corn) into one big event. B.L.T. will take place on Tuesday, August 5, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Brenton Skating Plaza in Des Moines. For $25 (plus taxes and fees), ticketholders will get:
- One B.L.T.– Prepared by Café di Scala with six pieces of bacon from Berkwood Farms and Des Moines Bacon Company, lettuce from Grade A Gardens, tomatoes from Butcher Crick Farms, and bread from South Union Bread Cafe & Bakery
- Two ears of Iowa sweet corn – Picked fresh in the morning by Mott’s Family Farms then smothered in your choice of Iowa butter or the family’s famous bacon butter
- Four 8 oz. beer samples – Left Hand Brewing Company (Longmont, Colorado) will share its award-winning series of beers, including Milk Stout Nitro and 3 others
- Live Music from Des Moines bluegrass band Mr. Baber’s Neighbors
Additional beer will be available for purchase. This event is open to people 21 and older, and it will take place rain or shine under the new canopy at Brenton Skating Plaza. Tickets may be purchased online through Eventbrite. Only 1,000 tickets will be sold for the event.
