Fox’s Bob Beckel’s leg quip ended with him putting his foot in his mouth when sharing his thoughts about his female co-host on “Five at Five.” Beckel is heard loud and clear telling a very pretty Kimberly Guilfoyle that if her “legs were a foot shorter” she wouldn’t have a job, reports Raw Story on Sept. 13.
This remark was seen as “sexist” and the social media was quick to pick this up. Beckel can’t possibly believe that Guilfoyle’s long legs got her the job there. What physical attribute does he think he got hired for, or his co-host Greg Gutfeld?
Beckel is seen every weeknight as one of the hosts of “The Five at Five” on the Fox News station. He has a tendency at times to say what he is thinking before sending it through that inner filter that says it is OK to say out loud or that it isn’t. This is one of those times that it looks as if he bypassed that filter.
According to Mediaite News today, the conversation was centered around the new press secretary for the Obama Administration, Josh Earnest. Guilfoyle was quick to add she doesn’t like him. Beckle mumbled, “Better than the last guy,” he was talking about Jay Carney. He continued saying “Just in terms of what he looks like.”
The banter continued with Guilfoyle saying “Oh, so we’re going on looks?” She added, “That’s perfect.” Getting in on the bantering, Dana Perino piped up, “Yes, Kimberly we are.” Co-host Greg Gutfeld, who is usually the one getting the jaws to drop by something he says, adds to the conversation. He said “We would never do that here on “The Five.”
Beckle not to be forgotten in this barrage of nonsense at this point pipes up and said to Guilfoyle, “That coming out of your mouth is a little bit of a stretch. If those legs of yours were a foot shorter, do you think you’d be here?”
Guilfoyle closed the conversation down by saying if her legs weren’t so long she could sit comfortably behind the table like co-host Perino. Fox News has been accused in the past of hiring pretty female anchors that happen to be blond, but what never seems to be mentioned is how those blonds have some of the brightest minds across the board of cable news shows.
One might say that Fox didn’t put too much stock in hiring the best looking male anchors for the show “Five at Five,” where Beckle made this “legs” comment. Now that he’s mentioned it, he and Gutfeld won’t have to worry about what they are going to wear when they’re called upon as the sexiest men alive, because that’s probably not going to happen.
