Forecast discussion: For the third weekend in a row, a high pressure center is controlling the weather pattern for Boston. The high will stick around for a few days, but we will begin to feel higher humidity in the air. As the high continues to move east of the area, our winds will turn to the southwest. This will allow for air off the Gulf of Mexico to make its way up into Southern New England.
For now, this high will bring dry, humid weather into Tuesday. There will be so much moisture in the air by Tuesday we will begin to see the formation of high and mid- level clouds by the afternoon. At the moment, the computer models are showing temperatures in the middle to even upper 80’s with high humidity. This would make the heat index make it feel like the lower 90’s.
As we head into the middle of next week, a slow moving cold front will help trigger some isolated to scattered showers by early Wednesday morning, even though the front is still in the Great Lakes. It will slowly move eastward. Also, the jet stream will create a very strong area of maximum winds right over New England on Thursday. This area will help create the possibility for some strong thunderstorms. There may be strong winds and lightning associated with them.
So, that means we are looking ahead to the long holiday weekend. Right now, it appears the front will slowly move offshore during the late morning or early afternoon on Friday. We may see some partial clearing in time for any firework shows during the evening. High pressure will once again clear our skies by next Saturday.
Also, I will be watching the Southeast U.S. very closely as well over the weekend. Believe it or not, the National Hurricane Center is watching a weak low pressure system offshore of South Carolina. Based on the current model runs, there is a 60% chance the low becomes our first tropical depression of the 2014 season. If you want to know more, you can read the story by clicking here.
