Forecast discussion: A strong high pressure system passing through the eastern Great Lakes brought a hint of summer back into Boston on Saturday. It showed in our thermometers, as the high temperature reached 81 degrees at Logan Airport. However, it was five degrees short of reaching the all-time high temperature for September 27. We will see a couple of more days of warm weather, before we return to more autumn conditions.
As the high moves closer, winds will begin to shift to the southwest. This will cause the risk of patchy fog during the overnight. All fog will burn off by mid-morning, as our high temperatures will reach the lower to middle 80’s. Some cooler air from Canada will slowly come back into Southern New England on Monday, but daytime highs will still reach the middle 70’s.
As we head into Monday night, this is where the computer models begin to diverge on their predictions. The American model and European model have been different on how to handle a low pressure system that will move up towards the coast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. The low lingers in the same spot for Monday evening. The models agree the low will move northeast. But, the American model believes we will see showers come in from the east on Tuesday. The possible showers continue into Wednesday morning, before the precipitation shield begins to move offshore. The European model takes the low further east, keeping us ouit of any precipitation chances.
For now, I will keep continuity with the forecast, as the American model has been showing the risk for some showers. We will see a weak high pressure ridge from Canada give us partly sunny skies for the rest of Wednesday afternoon into Thursday. A cold front from the west will bring us the next risk for some showers on Saturday. Temperatures will slowly warm up into the upper 60’s to lower 70’s by next Saturday.
