On Wednesday, August 27, 2014, Broward County held a kick-off meeting to begin the process of updating their land use and comprehensive plans. With a large audience in attendance at the Broward County Governmental Center, many more listened as well via webcast.
Anne Castro, Chair of the Broward Planning Council started the agenda, followed by remarks from Bertha Henry, Broward County Administrator and Vice Mayor Patricia Asseff, President of the Broward League of Cities. Citing this needs to be an inclusive process that will engage comments from everyone in Broward County, Vice Mayor Asseff stressed that we need to be “one Broward.”
Directing this collaborative effort are Henry Sniezek, Director and Maribel Feliciano, Planning Administer, both from the Broward County Planning and Redevelopment Division and Barbara Blake-Boy, Executive Director of the Broward Planning Council. Sniezek, providing historical land use for the county, stressed that this process is being undertaken because the code originally written in the 70’s and 80’s for a more suburban, car centric, lower density region is no longer applicable. It needs to be updated for the county’s present and future needs addressing issues of climate change, affordable housing, roadway networks (complete streets, transit), barrier islands, post disaster and intergovernmental relations. Comments from the audience asked that issues of local food and vulnerable populations be included as well.
Looking to streamline the plans, GOPs was the word of the day; goals, objectives and policies. With the creation of an ad hoc committee, there will be several working groups focused on the seven following areas.
- Natural, Recreational and Historic Resources
- Public Facilities
- Disaster Prevention and Emergency Management
Looking at a time frame of 30 years out, working group meetings will start as soon as October 2014. The final recommendations for changes to the land use and comprehensive plan are anticipated to be completed sometime in 2016.
Broward County encourages everyone to participate in the process. There will be a future website that will allow for interested parties to follow the process and to contribute. Another venue to provide comments is through the website myvoice.broward.org.
