The San Francisco 49ers lost their second consecutive game with a 23-14 loss to the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday afternoon. This dropped the 49ers to 1-2 as the Cardinals are now 3-0, two games ahead of San Francisco in the NFC West division.
Coming out of the second half, the Cardinals awakened on offense with two touchdown passes to John Brown in the third quarter. The first one was setup by a 45-yard deep pass to Michael Floyd.
Two personal foul penalties on the 49ers moved the chains which included a late hit on Dan Skuta and roughing the passer on Patrick Willis. Brown’s second touchdown was a 24-yard pass to the right where Jimmie Ward was beaten. Chandler Catanzaro added a field goal late and it sealed the deal, making it a two possession game.
The 49ers failed to score any points in the second half and are the only team in the NFL to not have points scored in the fourth quarter. They had one possession in the red zone, but a personal foul on Anquan Boldin for head butting a player moved the 49ers back. Phil Dawson’s field goal was blocked by Tommy Kelly, denying any chance to cut the 20-14 lead.
The 49ers began the game with two 80-yard drives that resulted in touchdowns on offense. Their first one had a combination of Stevie Johnson with an important third down reception and scrambles by Colin Kaepernick. It ended with a pass to Michael Crabtree in the left corner of the end zone.
Their second touchdown was kept alive by a third down holding penalty on the Cardinals’ defense as well as more runs by Kaepernick. He had eight rushes for 44 yards on both possessions, but five important attempts happened on this one.
Carlos Hyde finished it off with a touchdown run to the left inside the red zone. It was his second time finding the end zone in his NFL career in his third game.
