A brutal fight broke out this week in the middle of a kindergarten graduation in Ohio — and it was all caught on video in a viral pop culture trend. Local authorities are still working on charging a 33-year-old man who is suspected for sparking the massive graduation brawl and disrupting what should have been a happy day for the children. United Press International News reports this Tuesday, June 3, 2014, that no one was seriously hurt in the fight, but Springfield Township police are still trying to piece together just what led all of these adults to have an all-out fistfight in front of their kids.
Charges will definitely be filed in this weird news case, as a physical assault was cited during the kindergarten graduation assembly. A man identified as Raymond Walker is believed to have pushed another adult attending the event during an argument, eventually leading to the much bigger incident. Springfield Township law enforcement officials believe that over 150 children from Mt. Healthy North Elementary School watched on in horror as the brutal brawl eventually escalated to roughly 20 people getting involved in the melee. The tension can be felt as a witness managed to catch the confusion on video with a recording device.
“The assault did induce panic during the assembly, causing several in attendance to be pushed,” a police officer in the Springfield Township, Ohio, area wrote in a statement later addressed to the Hamilton County Municipal Court. “The school was placed on lockdown and then eventually evacuated.”
WPTV News notes that the accused, Raymond Walker, is currently being charged with physical assault and causing a public panic and disturbance after he allegedly initiated a fight with victim Dominique Garrett, who was injured in the shocking and unexpected brawl. Police have said that the incident is highly uncommon, especially because it was at an event as innocent and positive as a kindergarten graduation ceremony.
“It’s unusual,” said local Police Lt. Brian Uhl. “These things typically don’t break out at kindergarten graduations, but obviously there was some issue between the two. It’s just unfortunate it had to take place there.”
According to Mt. Healthy Schools Superintended Lori Handler, the local school district will eventually “prosecute any suspects to the fullest extent of the law” once all investigations and proceedings have been completed. A parent at the event was said to have nearly been attacked in the 20 something brawl, and called the whole thing “pathetic” and unfair to the young kids trying to celebrate graduating.
“It was horrible,” parent Kim Calai shared with a news source. “I’m standing there, and all of a sudden, this rush of people throwing punches is coming at me. There was a gentleman who was carrying a newborn that got hit. To have something like that happen at a graduation is pretty pathetic.”
