Ever dreamed of visiting the heavens? Well it’s possible for a cool hundred thousand dollars. That’s the anticipated cost floating around from several companies that are competing to be the first to legitimately offer a tourist a ride into space. Announced today, the largest online movie ticket provider, Fandango, has teamed up in a one-of-a-kind partnership with Paramount Pictures, Motherboard/VICE channel, and XCOR Aerospace to provide a free trip to space to one lucky winner.
Starting today on Fandango, film fans buying a Fandango movie ticket to Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated Paramount Pictures and Warner Bros. Pictures’ release, “INTERSTELLAR,” will be entered for a chance to win the ultimate escape: a trip to the frontier of space on XCOR’s Lynx Mark II spacecraft.
Coincidentally, space race competitor Space X / Virgin Galactic who are also hoping to take people into space had a test flight crash earlier today in California killing one and injuring another as reported by Time.com. Hopefully that will not put a damper on this very cool contest centered around what is no doubt going to be a mega blockbuster movie, “Interstellar.”
Fandango is ecstatic about offering a prize of this magnitude. Their VP of Marketing Adam Rockmore expressed, “We’re always looking for innovative ways to add value to our Fandango movie ticket for consumers, whether it’s gifts-with-purchase, bundling packages or high-end sweepstakes. The “INTERSTELLAR” trip is clearly the coolest prize we’ve ever given to a moviegoer in the fourteen years of our company. There is certainly no bigger and better way to celebrate a movie event like ‘INTERSTELLAR’ than to send one of our moviegoers on a life-changing journey to space.”
“INTERSTELLAR,” stars Academy Award® winning actors Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway, along with Academy Award® nominee Jessica Chastain, opens with advance screenings in IMAX® 70mm film, 70mm film and 35mm film formats on Wednesday, November 5, two days ahead of its nationwide release on November 7. The buzz around town is that the best way to take in this film is with IMAX and the larger format screens, and if you want to see them early that you should consider buying your tickets early.
XCOR Chief Executive Officer Jeff Greason commented on the partnership,”Frontiers are not opened by the faint-hearted, “Interstellar” offers those of us working to create a hopeful future for humanity in space the chance to stop and enjoy the vistas of that future for a few hours, and this flight makes it possible for one more person to take the journey with us on board Lynx.”
American private company, XCOR Aerospace is a spaceflight development company that specializes in rocket engine design and is based at the Mojave Spaceport in California.
Also sponsoring the prize is the VICE’s online channel, which features technology, science, and culture programming. Announced just yesterday via Wall Street Journal, is that VICE will be on air in Canada, and is spending $100 million on their studio to develop the channel.
