The United States is still not a nation where the majority of people commute by walking, biking or public transportation. Department of Transportation says the average is 13,476 miles put on the American car in one year. If car owners cannot reduce the number of miles they drive, they can at least purchase vehicles which are durable and designed to last. How can buyers tell which ones last the longest?
In September 2014, the iSeeCars.com website of 30 million used car listings nationally researched all its listings for those from 1981 to 2010 with over 200,000 miles. They cut it down to the top 12 models with the highest 200,000 plus miles and found the only car that met the qualifications was the Honda Accord. The rest were all trucks or SUVs.
The Honda Accord midsize sedan is known for its reliability and the percentage of cars over 200,000 miles was 1.6.
The big SUV GMC Yukon has also been durable over the years and the percentage of cars over 200,000 miles was 1.6.
More popular pickups are the Ram 1500, Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Silverado but the GMC Sierra 1500 is the only one of the four on the list and its percentage of pickups with over 200,000 miles is 1.6.
1.7 percent of the Toyota Sequoia SUV listings made the list of over 200,000 miles.
The GMS Yukon XL is the larger version of the GMC Yukon and more expensive but made the list at 1.9 percent of its car listings having over 200,000 miles.
Almost the same as the GMC Yukon with some design changes, the Chevrolet Tahoe came in at 2.1 percent of its listings having over 200,000 miles.
The larger more rugged version of the number 3 GMC Sierra 1500, the GMC Sierra HD had 2.7 percent of its listings having over 200,000 miles on the odometer.
3.0 percent of the large Ford Expedition SUVs listed had over 200,000 miles.
3.5 percent of the Toyota 4Runners listed had over 200,000 miles.
The listings of the biggest SUV on the road today, the Chevrolet Suburban, had 3.6 percent of them with over 200,000 miles on them.
Also, 3.6 percent of the Chevrolet Silverado HD truck listings are still on the road after 200,000 miles.
Finally, the one of the list with 4.2 percent of its listings having over 200,000 miles on them was the Ford Super Duty of the very popular Ford F-series trucks.
