The question is “Can evolution be compatible with the Bible? There is a lot of people, although they may not know the term, are theistic evolutionists. They believe God used evolution to create the universe and everything in it. For some, this is an acceptable compromise. They believe in God but also believe in some aspects of evolution. This to them satisfies the inward conviction that there must be a Creator and provides scientific respectability. For these people, evolution is compatible with the Bible. But is it?
Many since Charles Darwin’s time (mid-late 1800s) who knew the Bible and believed what it said tried to reinterpret Scripture to make it compatible with the theory of evolution. But there are theories of theistic evolution that are generally in conflict with each other. This suggests that reconciling evolution with the Bible is not as easy as some claim.
These theories uncritically accept some aspects of evolution and reinterprets Genesis to force it to accommodate those aspects. The day-age theory, framework theory, gap theory, revelation theory, and progressive creation theory are better known efforts to reinterpret the early chapters of Genesis.
One such aspect to why these theories do not hold water (no pun intended), is about when fossils were formed. Gap theorists especially believe that the fossil record was formed, not in Noah’s global flood, but when God destroyed the earth in “the gap” between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2. Gap theorist, who are old earth creationists have not understood how Noah’s flood rapidly formed fossils and deposited sedimentary layers with a total average thickness of one mile. For that reason, they believe that Noah’s flood was less destructive than the judgment they claim preceded the Creation week. No clear biblical passage supports the worldwide destruction they imagine, and they mishandle references to Noah’s flood by many biblical writers and Jesus Christ Himself (Matthew 24:37-39),(Luke 17:26-27). The gap theory resulted to a large extent, from failure to comprehend Noah’s flood. It was Lucifer’s flood (Genesis 1:2) that gap theorists believe formed the fossils. But no animals or plants existed yet. Earth was in its beginning stages to make it hospitable and habitable for plants, animals, and its ultimate creation :man. “For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited : I am the LORD; and there is none else” (Isaiah 45:18).
Old earth creationists believe “the gap” of Genesis 1:2 which made the earth “formless and void”, remained that way for eons (perhaps millions or even billions of years) until in Genesis 1:3 according to the gap theory, describes the beginning of the second creation with the first day of the (re) creation week, the familiar six-day creation.
According to the gap theory, the death and destruction shown by the fossil record, including the death of supposedly pre-Adamic man, preceded Adam’s creation. But the Bible clearly states that death came because of Adam’s sin (therefore, after Adam’s creation)(Romans 5:12).
Gap theorists accept that the earth is billions of years old. Therefore, they try to find where a vast period of time might fit in the Bible. They know that long periods of time cannot be inserted after Adam’s creation because the various genealogies are tightly linked.
Gap theorists or ones who believe in “the gap” start the creation week at Genesis 1:3. Up until then a vast length of time existed as they state, “whatever geologists demand”. The gap theory actually rides on the back of evolution and “is not” compatible with the Bible.
