I had not visited Freeport, long island for quite awhile. although I had heard that their “Nautical” mile had lots to offer.in the way of fun and exciting seafood. My curiosity got the better of me this past week and we decided to visit Freeport and review “Hudson’s on the Mile”. Hudson’s is part of the Dover Group, who have an impressive list of restaurants and catering venues under their corporate umbrella. I had recently visited Dover’s reinvented Peter’s Clam Bar in Island Park. We were tremendously impressed with their bringing this iconic venue back to its pre-eminent position. New Help, New Chef and a return to the winning recipes that made this place great!
The ride to Freeport’s nautical mile was fast and pleasant. The nautical mile is a potpourri of of souvenir shops, boats, restaurants, bars.. You are surrounded at virtually every corner with caribbean and pop music along with singing and dancing couples enjoying a gorgeous summer night. In other words, the mile is a great place to relax, enjoy beautiful summer nights and some really good food at reasonable prices.
We arrived at Hudson’s restaurant which stands out in the night with its bright lights and lively outdoor dining.Parking was a pleasure in Hudson’s private valet assisted parking lot.The restaurant has multiple indoor and outdoor dining areas and bars. With the musical sounds of the caribbean in the background, we sat in an intimate dining room with a great view of the water, and the crowds of people entering the restaurant.
The wait staff at Hudson’s is an eclectic group of seasoned pros; college kids; and an experienced and welcoming management. We were fortunate to have Ricky the floor manager as our host.Ricky is charming, polite, knowledgeable and helped make our evening enjoyable. Jon our waiter waas enthusiastic, and helped us with our menu selections.
Hudson’s menu and specials are diverse, offering delicious seafood, steaks, burgers and assorted comfort food items.
We began our evening with an assortment of seafood appetizers:
A Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail- The chilled pink and white shrimp were a meal in itself. Enormous shrimp served with cocktail sauce, and lemon. Super delicious and the size of prawns.
Baked clams oreganate- Whole little neck clams with seasoned bread crumbs, lemon and white wine and garlic.
As Caesar salad lovers, we enjoyed sharing a house caesar with crispy hearts of romaine, croutons and Hudson’s caesar dressing.
Our entrees included a Lobster Special- A boiled 1 -1/2 pound fresh caught lobster Accompanied by Corn on the cob and little new potatoes. Succulent, inexpensive and more than enough to take home a “goodie bag” for another meal.
We also shared a delicious Seafood Fra Diavolo- an extra large platter filled with lobster, scallops, shrimp, clams, and mussels over a magnificent mound of linguine in a mild fra-diavolo sauce. Delicious and generously portioned
We relaxed, soaked in the night sea air, and watched a beautiful sunset We ended our meal with a delicious dessert plate with slices of New York Cheesecake, and Coconut cream pie. A perfectly sweet touch to a highly enjoyable seafood dinner.
Hudson’s on the mile provides a unique venue and location set against a backdrop of boats, the sea and lots of shops and dining venues. The fun has just begun at Hudson’s, as the Dover management group brings this restaurant to its maximum potential.
Come On Down for lots of fun in the sun. Music nightly, and lots of great people watching.
Kudos to the Dover Group for once again re-inventing an old standby …Hudson’s on the mile.
