“48 Hours” is an investigative program that covers crime in the United States. Last night’s episode was reported & narrated by Susan Spencer. She traveled out of the U.S. to cover Americans who lived in Costa Rica.
“Paradise Lost” opened with Susan Spencer touring a house hidden away at Boracayan, Costa Rica. John & Ann Bender built their home in a kind of nature reserve in the middle of nowhere. John was a wall street wizard who had tons of money. He supposedly shot himself in a suicide. Ann was the only other person in that house & was charged with his murder.
They were both married after a whirlwind romance in 1999. Ann was later diagnosed with bi-polar mood disorder & John suffered from depression who hated doctors. He was smart & became a top trader on wall street. He made $80 million by age 25 & then built a hedge fund worth $600 million in 5 years. John couldn’t fit in with the wall street crowd & one day, out of the blue, he quite.
When they built their home in Costa Rica. It brought jobs to the local community, but the town-folk didn’t like what these rich people were doing. John & Ann bonded through their “depression” who isolated themselves from the outside world.
Someone broke into their home sanctuary & the couple had to buy guns to protect themselves. They lived in fear when John set up a $70 million dollar trust fun to run the sanctuary. A lawyer named Juan Alvarez was hired to watch over that trust. John was seeing a therapist, but wouldn’t take anti-depressant pills.
They both had fallen into a deeper depression by 2010. John & Ann refused to leave their sanctuary & he blamed himself for everything. John brought a 9 millimeter “Ruger” pistol to bed with him on the night of Jan. 7, 2010. He planned to kill himself. Ann grabbed for the gun as it went off. John was dead & Ann said that he dropped it.
Why did Ann grab for the gun? Why was there no evidence of a struggle for that gun? How come there was $20 million dollars worth of diamonds & gems in that home? You can watch “Paradise Lost” over at “48 Hours.”
