There’s no way around it, Johnny Ortez-Tibbels is “The Dachshund Whisperer.”
Over the past decade, not only has he gathered one of the most active and largest Dachshund regular monthly Meet-ups in the country, if not the world, he has a successful coffeetable book “102 Dachshunds” and he founded the charity DOGS (Dachshund Outreach Giving and Socialization), which help educate about the breed and assists in medical treatments.
“I just feel this amazing connection to these little creatures, and I love taking photos of them,” says Ortez-Tibbels, who is based in Ojai, California (and he also is the Small Dogs Examiner.) “I’m a big fan of the Dachshund, they have a unique body type and are a small dog with a big personality,”
You can meet Johnny and see his art for sale to benefit DOGS in a two-day exhibit, and it’s a great time to visit the beautiful mountain community of Ojai, about an hour’s drive north of Los Angeles.
The Dachshund Fine Art Photography by Johnny will have all the proceeds go to the charity, which has turned two years old, and it’s also the weekend of Johnny’s birthday. The images he picked are inspired by his book, and he also has photos of Dachshunds around Ojai.
The gallery showing will go from 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, June 28 and Sunday, June 29 at Gallery 525 (http://www.gallery525.com/) located at 525 W El Roblar Dr, Ojai, California 93023. Johnny will be there the entire time, and so will a few live Dachshunds.
Both weekend evenings from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. there will be a wine and cheese reception featuring the Dachshund Riesling (http://halbymarketing.com/dachshund-riesling). There will also be some whimsical books and shirts on sale.
DOGS is celebrating its 2nd year anniversary this June 2014 and the 501c3 has distributed life-saving literature to 148 Dachshund families in 28 different states. AND this summer we’re already slated to deliver pamphlets to another 65 (and counting) families. Click this Examiner article for details.
Throughout his activism, he has helped promote dental care for dogs—a discounted dental hygiene helped the mouths of 52 dogs in 8-and-half hours last March. There was also a Dachshund neutering via Dachshund Rescue and Placement; a Long Beach Museum of Art Yappy Hour Social for the Architecture for Dogs exhibit and the LA Doxies’ Annual Holiday Celebration. The charity’s commitment is to educate, do community outreach and to provide varied socialization opportunities each year for both Dachshunds and their humans.
Johnny moved last year from Los Angeles to Ojai with his husband, Hollywood producer Kirkland Tibbels. They live with their three miniature Dachshunds: Rufus, Emily and Lily.
