The interesting life of actor, producer and writer Cengiz Dervis. We recently interviewed him about his inspirations and his drive to reach the top in the field he is most passionate about, acting!
Please introduce yourself to the readers:
Hello I’m Cengiz Dervis, actor, combat expert, producer and writer from London, UK.
How and when did you first get into performing?
From the age of 9, I did a few school plays and was a singer in a band, competed in Martial arts competitions and made short films on a handheld video camera with friends. So I’ve been performing in some shape or form since I was a teenager.
Who were some of your biggest inspirations?
I’m always inspired by people who go out and make their goals and dreams a reality no matter how many times they fail and no matter how long it takes to break through, to achieve it. A great example in the world of acting is Sylvester Stallone. However, there are so many examples and I thank them all for demonstrating it can be done if your prepared to work hard, make sacrifices, take risks and never quit.
What kind have training have you done?
I started out doing a 1 year drama/theatre foundation course after which I focused all my attention to screen acting and over the last 12 years I’ve attended classes, courses and workshops focused on screen acting. I’ve covered a number of very interesting systems, methods, techniques including: Stanislaski, Uta Hagan, Meisner Technique and I attend weekly one on one coaching with an American (NY) acting coach.
What has been your favorite role to play so far?
Playing the Hitman Mr Gallo in feature film Retribution was a fantastic opportunity to become someone completely different. From the way he walks, how he processes information and situations, his accent, everything, every detail was so different and I loved it.
What projects do you have coming up?
I currently have 3 feature films in the pipeline. The Drake Files, The Meeting and Galahad which will be filming in 2015/16.
Who would be your ideal co-star and why?
There are so many people I’d love to work with, but for an intelligent action thriller I’d have to say Matt Damon. From what I’ve seen of him it’s clear he’s absolutely professional and a genuine person. I’d love the opportunity to work with such a true outstanding professional and I have no doubt the opportunity would have me raise my game to a new level and we’d have loads of fun in the process.
What are your plans for the future?
I’ve got some potential projects lined up in the US, so the aim is to stay busy on camera and enjoy every minute, along the way.
What is your advice to aspiring performers?
There’s no fast track and your only competition is in the mirror. Stay focused and never give up on your goals and dreams. If you really want to work in this beautiful, challenging business then, work on the craft regularly. Stay positive, avoid negativity, emotionally detach from any potential role after the audition and never ever quit.
