Champ Bailey has had a great NFL career, however after being released by the New Orleans Saints a week ago many thought Bailey may be hanging up his cleats. According to various reports, that may be far from the truth.
NFL.com reported on Sept. 4 Bailey worked out with the Detroit on Thursday, and the Lions may be interested in adding the pro-bowl DB. Bailey’s agent, Jack Reale told NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport Bailey has a lot left in the tank and is excited at the possibility of hooking on with another team.
“Definitely, and he is fully healthy now,” Reale said. “He had a plantar problem, which is resolved, but he just missed too much time for the coach’s evaluation to be complete and unfortunately in the last two games they didn’t throw at him, so he couldn’t show his stuff. He is fine.”
Reports indicate Bailey’s work out went well and the Lions liked what they saw out of the 36 year-old veteran. However as of right now, mum’s the word on if Detroit is adding Bailey or not.
One reason the Lions may not sign Bailey this week could be that if they do and things don’t work out, Detroit will be on the hook for paying a full year’s salary to Bailey. NFL rules state that veteran’s contracts are guaranteed for the year if they are signed before Week 1. Since opening weekend is only 72 hours away, Detroit could very well sign Bailey moments after they face the Giants this week on Monday Night Football.
This is a move the Lions should make. Bailey could add a great veteran presence to a team that has had a below average defensive back field for several seasons.
